VISIT OF H.M.S. DUNEDIN

PROGRAMME OF ENTERTAINMENT. With several amendments, the tentative programme for the entertainment of the officers and men of H.M.S. Dunedin from February 18 to 22 was adopted by a meeting presided over by the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) last night, and will be submitted to the proper authorities for confirmation. The suggested arrangements were published in the Daily News on Monday. The following executive committee was set up to superintend and organise the arrangements: —The Mayor, Mesdames E. A. Walker, C. H. Weston, Miss Bedford, Lieut.-Colonel C. H. Weston, Captain W. Waller, Messrs. P. E. Stainton, G. M. Spence, L. Little, W. H. Moyes and S. G. Smith. It wa a decided that the ship’s band should be invited to play at the motor cycle sports on Saturday, February 18. It was announced that the New Plymouth Motor Cycle Club had agreed to give all profits above £2O to the unemployed fund. The tea for the naval men at 6 p.m. will be provided by the carnival committee. Navy Chaplain T. R. Richards said he had sent an invitation to Commander Swabey for the officers and men of the Dunedin to attend a church parade at Whiteley Memorial Church at 10.45 a.m. on the Sunday. It was decided' that veterans should be asked to attend the parade. The arrangements for the inspection of th© ship by the children on the Monday was left to a committee, of , local headmasters, with Mr. S. G. Smith, chairman or the Education Board, as convenor. Mr. S. G. Smith pointed out that if all the country children within reach of the railway line were brought in they and the town children would number 9000. It would be necessary to provide hot water, etc., for the country children. Mr. C. E. Bellringer, M.P., said he thought the Harbour Board would provide hot water. The Legion of Frontiersmen, the rowing club and the Ngamotu Seaside Society are to be asked to organise stalls, ete., at the port. The Kawaroa Park Society will be asked to arrange in the park on the. Monday evening a concert to include items by the ship's band. The question of an entertainment for Tuesday evening was left to the executive, with suggestions for dancing on th© green and a boxing carnival, the Caledonian Pipe Band to play on the night. Mr. Connett said Mrs. Lorimer, of the North Egmont hostel, had offered to entertain free the officers one evening and a limited number of guests. Or she was willing to co-operate in any other way agreed on regarding a visit to the mountain. The executive will meet at the Borough Council Chambers at 4 p.m. today.
