“PURPOSE TO BUILD SHIPS"

UNITED STATES NAVAL AFFAIRS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. A. and N.Z. Washington, Feb. 6, Commander C. Burney, of the British House of Commons Naval Committee, attended a session of the House Naval Committee. The chairman (Mr. Butler) said: "J hope he will learn that the purpose of the committee is to build ships.” Received Feb. 7, 8.55 p.m. A. and N.Z. Washington, Feb. 6. Hearings are practically completed before the Naval Committee of the House of Representatives and uncertainty concerning the exact cost of the navy programmes is visualised in a statement by Representative Vonson, who said he estimated the naval appropriations for the next eight years would total 1,152,000,000 dollars, while Representative Britten said the total would be three billions.

The Secretary of the Navy has therefore been asked to prepare a chart showing complete details and the cost of all vessels proposed. Commander Burney informally told the committee that English statesmen did not consider the American programme in the light of competitive building.
