CYCLING AT PAEROA

SUUCCESS OF TARANAKI, RIDERS. Paeroa, Feb. 4. The Paeroa Athletic Club held it* cycling gala at Paeroa to-day under ideal weather conditions. There was a good attendance and some fine racing was witnessed. The Wailii Federal Band was in attendance. The appearance of W. Mackie (Christchurch), who will shortly go to England and France to compete in leading cycling events, created much interest and hie effort in the two miles handicap was excellent. He started from 59yds behind scratch, and was with the leaders 299yds from the post. He lost his pedal and lost ground, finishing fourth. In the five miles event he showed his true form and starting from 109yds behind scratch, soon made up his leeway and won with a great burst of speed. He had a great reception from the crowd. In the 3'A miles contest he came at -the right end and won well. The points prize fell to him. Principal results are: — One Mile Cycle Handicap—First heat: W. Godkin, 180yds, 1; W. Francis, 120 yards, 2; C. Chisholm, 180yds, 3. Second heat: Alexander, 200yds, 1; C. O’Brien, 180yds, 2; A. Pilkington, 120yds, 3. Third heat: W. Renouf, 135yds, 1; T. Russek, 200yds, 2; O. Stace, 80yds, 3. Final: Alexander, 1; Renouf, 2; Chisholm, 3. Two Miles Handicap.—First heat: J. Harcourt, ecr, 1; W. Francis, 180yds, •2; W. Godkin, 260yds, 3. Time, smin lusec. Third heat: O. Tippins, 35yds, 1; M. Randrup, 120yds, 2; 0. Stace, 120 yards, 3. Time, Sin 6see. Final: Tippins, 1; M. Randrup, 2; Stace, 3. Time, 5m in. Three Miles Handicap.—S. McCann, 60 yards bhd, 1; W. Mackie, 70yds bhd, 2; J. Harcourt, scr, 3; C. Tippins, 50yds, 4. Time, 7min 35sec. This was a great race, in which 18 started. For the last three rounds Mackie, McCann, Tippins and Harcourt were locked together and although Mackie was in a winning position, he dropped back to allow McCann to take a lap and then failed to catch him by inches. Tho four placed men finished within five yards of one another. One Mile Race, boys under 17 years.— M. Rackham and H. Sorensen (dead heat), 1; M. Irwin, 3. Time, 2min 47 see. Five Miles Cycle Handicap.—W. Mackie, 190yds bhd, 1; C. Tippins, 100yds, 2; S. McCann, 80yds bhd, 3. Time, 13min •39eec. The three placed men made up theii - handicap when there were still seven laps to go and they hung together for the remainder of the race. Mackie put in a great spurt in the last round and won by a length. McCann just getting up in the last five yards to third place by half a wheel. Three and a-half Miles Handicap.— Mackie, 80yds bhd, 1; Harcourt, 30yds, 2; McCann, 70yds bhd, 3; Tippins, 60 yards, 4. Time, 9min 59sec. A great race. The back markers caught their field in the last lap, and McCann led into the straight. Mackie, with a great spurt, passed him 20yds from the tape and Harcourt got up to get second by 3in. The points went to Mackie with 13 points, Tippins being second with 8 points.
