MUNICIPAL MATTERS
NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH. MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The New Plymouth Borough Council met. last night. Present: The Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) and Crs. S. G: Smith, W. W. Thomson, J. Lobb, J. Brown, F. D. Payne, T. McPhillips, F. Amoore and P. E. Stainton. Crs. Brown, Payne and Stainton were appointed a street lighting sub-com-mittee. One of the borough officers reported that he had completed hie inspection of the Ngaere Reserves, and was pleased to report that on nearly all the farms he found a considerable improvement, more especially in regard to the control of weeds. Paddocks that a year or two ago were yellow with ragwort had been brought into cultivation, and although this would not eradicate weeds it was an effective method of keeping them under control. In spite of the dry weather feed was plentiful, and numerous stacks of hay had been saved for winter and spring feed. The question of providing sanitary conveniences for women at the breakwater was referred to the works committee. The matter was brought up in a. letter from the Moturoa Progressive Association.
A renewed application by Mr. R. J. Brokenshire for an additional street light on Upper Mill Road was referred to the street light inspection committee. It was resolved that permission be granted to the Regimental Band to hold a recital at the breakwater and take up a collection on the afternoon on Sunday, February 19, provided the proceeds of the collection are donated to the New Plymouth unemployment relief fund, and that permission be granted to the Citizens Band to hold a recital at the breakwater and take up a collection an the evening of the same day under the same conditions.
The Green Island Borough Council is to be informed that the council cannot see its way to support the remit to the municipal conference that the Main Highways Board should take over and be wholly responsible for main arterial roads. The medical officer of health is to be informed that the council feels that it is practically impossible to close the Henui bathing pool at the East End reserve, but that as suggested by him a notice has been erected stating that those using it do so at their own risk. He is also to be informed that water from the high head was turned on at 7 a.m. on December 12 and left on until 5 p.m. the following day, after which the water for the next few days was drawn from the filters and reservoir as in the past. Mr. H. Marfell is to be told that as the nearest water pipe to his property in Tukapo Road is only J-inch and the pressure very low, the council cannot see its way to extend this pipe or make any further connections to It. Consideration of the letter from the Salvation Army with reference to the footpath on the Powderham Street side of the Citadel was deferred.
The Moturoa Ratepayers’ Association is to be informed, in reply to its letter requesting the council to require No. 3 bore to be sealed up, that the matter has been referred to the borough inspector to deal with in such way as the powers of the council may permit. The Fitzroy Progressive Association is to be informed that their request for street lights will be considered later on in the month when the street lighting committee is making its annual inspection.
The district engineer of railways Is to be thanked for the plan submitted by him in regard to the proposed stock route at Fitzroy to the Waiwakaiho bridge, and to be informed that the council does not desire to proceed any further with the proposal at’ the present time. The borough foreman was authorised to accede to the requests of the Taranaki Automobile Association that at Hie entrance of the roadway to the summit of Western Park the bank be cut back a little on the roadway and that the culvert be extended. A letter from the Taranaki Automobile Association with reference to the dangerous nature of the Vivian StreetMorley Street crossing was referred to the committee dealing with the question of the rounding-off of corners. The letter from the Fitzroy Progressive Association with reference to various works in that district was referred to the borough foreman to give effect to any request which comes entirely under ordinary maintenance, but the association is to be informed that funds will not permit anything in the nature of new works to be executed. New works already authorised, but which owing to unforeseen circumstances could not be carried out, will receive early consideration in the next financial year. With regard to the Buller Street entrance to the East End bathing reserve, the committee is to be informed that an’improvement has been authorised, but owing to unforeseen circumstances the council was unable to have it done. It will, however, be included iu the next year's estimates,
