USE OF HOSES PROHIBITED

BOROUGH OF NEW PLYMOUTH (FURTHER WATER RESTRICTIONS, WRONGFUL USE OF MOTOR-CAR> As from to-day, and until a further notice lifting the restriction is issued, the use of hoses in the borough of New* Plymouth is prohibited altogether. Cr. F. Amoore raised the question of the stat® of the water supply when he asked at a meeting of the council last night whether the present hour allowed for the use of hoses, 4 a.m. to 5 a.m., could conveniently be advaueed to between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m., as it was quite dark during the earlier hour. The Mayor (Mr. H. V. S. Griffiths) pointed out that the hour 4 a.m. to 5 a.m. had been purposely fixed as it wa« thought not many people would avail themselves of it. He thought thatt no risks should be taken, and the council should continue to take every precaution to avoid a shortage of water. Several members of the council raised the question of hosing motor-cars, which they considered was responsible for the wastage of a considerable amount of water. Cr. S. G. Smith: There are some patriotic citizens in this town who drive their ears on to their lawns and hose them down there so that the lawns may get watered. Cr. Amoore: Yes. Go round the town on a Sunday, and see how many people drive their cars round the lawn so that they can water lawns and gardens by hosing their cars. In reply to Cr. F. D. Payne, the electrical engineer (Mr. W. 11. Huggett) stated that the water had baen falling steadily until a few days ago. During tbe last few days, the flow had 'been practically constant. There was nb water going over the Mangamahoe spillway at nights now, however. After further discussion, it was generally agreed that the greatest care should be exercised until rain tame, and it wm resolved without dissent to prohibit the use of hoses altogether until furthei notice.
