DISTRICT NEWS

AWAKING. (From Our Own Correspondent.) Striking testimony to the esteem in which Mr. and Mrs. L. R. Calvert are held was given on Wednesday evening, when the settlers of Awakino and Mokau gathered in Awakino Hall to bid them farewell. During the evening Mr. T. R. Jones, chairman of the Awakino School Committee, presented Mr. and Mrs. Calvert with a handsome silver entree dish, and Master Dick Lake, one of the senior pupils of the school, presented Mrs. Calvert with a beautiful bouquet of roses and asparagus fern. Mr. Jones spoke in eulogistic terms of the way in which Mrs. Calvert had worked for the school aud the district during the six years of her residence here. He contrasted the present splendid condition of the school grounds with their wild state when Mrs. Calvert first tcok up duties here. These improvements were made possible through Mrs. Calvert’s efforts in raising considerable sums of money, which enabled the committee to form and metal a. road up to the school, to erect fences, plant hedges aud shelter trees, and effect other improvements. * Mr. Jones then presented Mr. Calvert with a handsome smokers’ set, from the Awakino Golf Club, of which Mr. Calvert has been president since its inauguration, and whose efforts chiefly are responsible for the forming of a golf club here. In replying, Mr. Calvert thanked their kind friends for the evening and also for the handsome gifts of which they had been the recipients. Both he and Mrs. Calvert were sorry to be leaving the district where they had made so many good friends. Any assistance they had given the local committees had been gladly rendered, and they regretted having to sever their connection with such willing workers. He and Mrs. Calvert extended a hearty invitation to their friends in these parts to call and renew old acquaintances when they take up their residence in their new heme. The singing of “Auld Lang Syne” concluded a very happy function.

OAONUI. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The plain and fancy dress ball, held in support of the hall funds, proved to be the most financial and social success ever attained at Oaonui. The grand march was led by Mr. H. F, Anniss and Mrs, J. Young, and it was not long before the floor was quickly filled with gay dancers. The hail was prettily decorated with streamers, nikau palms, etc., while summer flowers gave the scene a picturesque finish. The best fancy dress for the ladies was won by Miss Rene Ramsbottom, of Patea, a.s “Rule Britannia,” while the most original dress in the gents’ division was won by Mr. EJiot Clegg. Visitors were present from Patea, New Plymouth, Kaponga, Te Kiri and Pungarehu. The gross takings just fell short of £5O, which leaves the committee with a fair profit. Brooker’s orchestra supplied first-class musie, those assisting with extras being Mr, McCandlish, Miss McCandlish, Mr. Isaac Bishop and Mr. P. M. Brooker. A dainty spoon and fork supper, arranged by the ladies, was enjoyed by all. The success of the function is largely due to the energetic ladies who organised supper arrangements. Mr. Colin Bishop and Mr. W. Woolford carried out the duties of M.’sC. in their usual capable manner. Dancing was indulged in until the small hours of the morning, and at the conclusion a "gents' choir” surrounded the orchestra to sing “Show me the way to go home.”
