T.J.C. AUTUMN MEETING. PREPARATIONS ON THE TRACK. The Taranaki Jockey Club's autumn meeting, which opens on Thursday and concludes on Saturday, gives every promise of being one of the most successful yet held by the club. Splendid acceptances have been received and the presence of an additional contingent from Auckland ensures that there will be good fields, despite the hard tracks and the amount of racing of late. Indeed, from the quality of the horses there is every indication that the fields in the open races will be of as high a standard as have contested in previous races. The Stakes promises to attract as much interest as did that great Gloam-ing-Desert Gold classic. Reremoana, The Hawk, Gascony and High Finance will measure strides. The meeting of The Hawk and Reremoana alone will draw enthusiasts from all parts.

Despite the dry weather, Mr. J. Blewman has the course in splendid order, the lawns, too, looking particularly well, relieved with bright beds of flowers. The motor car parking ground in the gully is sure to prove very popular if the present hot weather continues, as its beautiful plantations provide an abundance of shade. With Mr. C. O’Connor as starter and Mr. W. P. Russell in the judge’s box, these two important departments will be capably handled. The Railway Department is providing special trains and excursion fares for the convenience of patrons. Already quite a number of visiting horses have arrived. The Auckland horse Transformer, in charge of W. Woods, arrived by the Ngapuhi on Friday and looking in fine fettle has pleased track watchers. By this morning’s boat J. Jamieson is expected with the ex-Taranaki horse Eden Hall, High Finance, The Immigrant and Dimmer. Of the horses that have been racing at Hawera a number arrived on Sunday and a further contingent yesterday, including: R. McMiken, Always; W. Donovan, Tiega, Greengrocer and Tea Miss; J. Cameron, The Hawk and Goshawk; W. Gall, Sleepy Sol and Restaurant; G New, Blimp and Le Champ; T. Daly, Hynanna; and W. Hawthorn, Lady Killer and Beaumont. The New Plymouth contingent also returned on Sunday with the exception of Hipo, Oration and Lady Quex, who returned on Saturday’s mail. Piuthair arrived on Saturday. The Hawera contingent, a very strong one, will arrive by special train on Thursday morning. The track was very busy yesterday, a number of horses being exercised, including The Hawk, Goshawk, Tiega, Tea Miss, Greengrocer, Transformer, Te Monanui, Miss Mercia, Te Atiawa, Mint Leaf, Oration, Hipo, Nastori, Melissa, Merxcius, Lady Quex, Flying Shot, The Swell, Cadenza, Iradale, Always, Fandu, Quilfire, Naizone, .Manly and Gold Dawn. Lady Quex did not suffer any ill effects from her fall at Hawera. Greengrocer may not start on Thursday, as he is reported to have pulled up lame on Saturday after the Tonks Stakes. Goshawk injured his foot slightly on Thursday and was not started on Saturday, but he appears to have thrown off all effects.

HEW PROGRAMMES. THE OPUNAKE MEETING. (By “Moturoa.”) The programme for the Opunake Racing Club’s annual meeting, to be held at Pihama on Saturday, March 17, is worth perusal by the crowd of horseowners and trainers at present in Taranaki. The tendency at the present time' is to reduce stakes, bub the Opunake Racing Club has not followed the general trend, and stakes offered this year are the same as those of 1927. Further, it may be mentioned, the course is easily reached by train, and accommodation is first class. Few country meetings offer the same inducement to owners, and betting at the gathering is spirited, as shown by the last year’s tote turnover, £19,778 for one day, a total which is not equalled by many North Island country clubs favoured with a two days’ meeting. While on the subject it may be added that Opunake’s claims for an additional race day cannot be disregarded much longer. The Opunake Cup is worth 400 sove. and the other open event of the programme, the St. Patrick’s Handicap, carries with it 250 sovs. Hack hurdlers are offered 200 sovs., while hack flat races are worth' from 150 sovs. to 200 sovs., and the Maiden Plate 100 sovs. Nominations are not due until February 22, but in drawing up their autumn programme of racing, horse owners and trainers should not overlook that date.

TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) As anticipated, the early closing of acceptances for the first day of the Tahiatua meeting resulted in wholesale scratchings on the day, and of 79 acceptors carded, 32 were withdrawn. # # * a The winner of the Maiden, Hinekatorangi, is a four-year-old mare by Tribulation, from the San Fran—Waiau mare Hinemanu, but the last named does not appear in the Stud Book. Hinemanu carried Mr. A. L. D. Fraser’s colours, and showed some form on the East Coast some twelve years ago. Hinekatorangi has shown promise recently, but Roy Reed’s alertness at the barrier had a great deal to do with her victory. * * * * The runner-up, Aurora Borealis, is a fair sort, and won on the second day. She is a three-year-old filly by Day Comet, from Rangiata, the latter being bred by the late W. D. Buick in 1915, and being by California or Aberbrothock, from Elusion, a mare by Vanguard. Aurora Borealis was followed home by Timi Inihi, a four-year-old gelding by Bourbon 11., out of the Stepniak mare Gipsy Belle, dam of Red Pepper and Star Ranger.

A false price was returned by Wilderness in the High-Weight Handicap, the public evidently fearing that the hard track would be against the Signor —• Civilisation gelding. Wilderness was Civilisation’s second foal, Civilform being the first, and Civility and Siaosi following. However, Wilderness had to stretch his neck to beat Lady Gay, a mare of which better things might have been expected on the racecourse. Lady Gay, as her name suggests, was got by Lady Lad, her dam, the Aus-tralian-bred Coronata, being also the dam of Bachelor Gay and Waetea, by Kilbroney.

Our old friend Willow Wai tried to win the race from end to end, but Wilderness caught him as they straightened up for the run home. Willow Wai did not have anything to tackle him early in the race on the second day, and returned a nice price. The form of Eoromea was too bad to be true.

Only £665 was handled on the Hamua Hack Handicap, a three-horse race —if one ean call Land Rent a racehorse! Tintoretto (Kilboy—Gold Painting) was a little better than even money favourite, and gave Roy Reed another comfortable ride. Lieutenant Bill, the run-ner-up, had A. Hobson in the saddle, and finished well clear of Land Rent (Acre—Toll Gate), on which Tommy Green did his best to keep in the picture.

Awapuni holiday form caused Oratrix to be made favourite in the Pahiatua Cup, and Jack Barry made no mistake with the daughter of Kilbroney and Oratress. Oratress was a 'short mare, by Demosthenes —Equitas, and it would be surprising if she did not leave good stock. Her first foal was Windbag (by Absurd), well known on Taranaki courses. Then came Oratrix and Concentrate, both by Kilbroney, and the pair should win good races. Since then Oratress has dropped two foals to Chief Ruler, and they are said to posseee size and quality. * * * *

Horsemanship accounted for the downfall of a hot favourite, Lin Arlington, in the Konini Hack Handicap, T. Green (on Hypnotic) being too clever for young Broughton. Green secured the mount on Lin Arlington in the Eketahuna Hack Handicap later in the day,

and, carrying the same weight, the Acre —Warmaid gelding won by a good margin in nearly on® second faster time. * * # * H. J. Batten has had a long run of “outs” with Lady Cynthia, but Ba.-ry persuaded her to do her best at the finish of the Makuri Hack Handicap, and she cut down her stablemate, Tanagra, and scored by a head, paying the best dividend of the day. Lady Cynthia is one of the few of the progeny of Cyntoi racing in New Zealand, and her dam, Meroz, was bred by W. M. J. Goodson, of Hawera, Tanagra, by Polydamor— Pauleen, is well enough bred to win in almost any company, being a half brother to Gazique, Over There, and other useful horses. • • • ♦ The All Black mare Hine Pango had two representations in the above race, Raukura and Hine Hohoro, both being by Absurd. Strange to say, they finish” ed third and fourth, the elder, Raukura, being just in front of hei- younger sister. *** . * Dobbin outclassed the sprinters in open races at the meeting, and, considering the poor opposition, returned good dividends. * * * * Capitulation’s form on the seconl day at Pahiatua proved a facer for the publie. A hot favourite in the High Weight Handicap, she could only finish an indifferent second to Widow Wai, and there was no second dividend. Produced two races later, she was the outsider of the field in the princ’pal handicap, but won nicely. Waieullus, the odds-on favourite, was last at one stage, and did. well to gain second berth. # * * # Par Money, winner of the Tararua Hack Handicap, was given in the book as by Paper Money, out of Paphear, but her dam is Paphia, by Birkenhead— Aphrodite. Paphia was the dam of Homeric (by Archilies), Aphrodisia and Ares (both by Martian), Paphia (by Bezonian), ajid. Oreform (by Bonifonnj. WEIGHTS AT MELBOURNE. .By Telegraph—Frees Assn. —Copyright. A. and N.Z. Melbourne. Feb. 6. The handicaps declared for the Newmarket Handicap include: Amounis (top) 9.11, Pinkerton 7.1. Australian Cup: Spearfelt (top) 10.4, Pilliwinkie 9.7, Naos $.4, Mars 7.5. Oakleigh Plate: Translater (top) 9.13. BLOODSTOCK CHANGES HANDS.

SOME HIGH PRICES REALISED.

Messrs. Wright, Stephenson and Co., Ltd., advise that since last week's sales they have disposed of at private treaty on account of Mr. W. G. Stead, Flaxmere, Hastings, two yearling fillies by Leighton from Lalla Rookh and Valvate. Th© former filly is a sister to the A.J.C. Canonbury Stakes winner, Ridgemount, and the latter is closely related to Father’s Voice, winner of the Caulfield Futurity Stakes. These two fillies were secured by an Australian buyer. A third filly sold on account of Mr, W. G. Stead was the Lord Quex —- Catalini filly which ranks as a halfsister to Paleta, winner of the .Great Northern Guineas. The latter filly was purchased on account of Mr. 13. E. Jolly, of South Australia. The filly will be put in training in New Zealand. The Chief Ruler—Gladiole filly, bred by Messrs. J. and F. J. O’Neill, Wanganui, was - secured by Mr. T. Dwan, of Wellington. This filly is a half-sister to that successful performer, Orchid. Mrs. G. W. Shannon, of Palmerston North, secured the filly by Cynic from Semplice, bred by Mrs. M. Lawrie, Gisborne. This filly is a close relative to those successful performers, Finora and Will Oakland. On account of Mr. T. H. Lowry, Okawa, Hawke’s Bay, the Psychology—Lovelock filly was sold to Mr. R. Cooper, Gladstone, Masterton, and the Grandcourt —First Blow colt to Air. Quentin Donald, Alloa, Featherston. The filly is a close relative to Menelaus, winner of the New Zealand Cup, and Nones, winner of the Wanganui Guineas, and the colt is a half-brother to that well-known performer and winner of the Great Northern Foal Stakes, Gascony. On account of Mr. G. D. Beatson, Riverlea, Hastings, the filly by Lackham out of Asterina was disposed of to Mr. E. Riddiford, Orongorongo. The firm also disposed of the English stallion Grand Knight to Mr. John Donald, Westmere, Wanganui. The latter breeder, who also secured the late Mr. J. F. Buchanan’s latest importation, Diacquenod, will have three stallions to place at the disposal of breeders at his Westmere stud next season. These are. Chief Ruler, already the sire of three winners and a number of place getters, Grand Knight and Diacquenod. At the three sales last week, at which this firm acted in conjunction, the total realisations amounted to approximately £29,000. Sixty-six yearlings were disposed of at an average of 256 J guineas. A record price for a New Zealand yearling was secured, and two mares were also disposed of at the Kinloch dispersal sale for prices which easily surpassed the record for a brood mare with foal. The new records established are 2,300 guineas for a yearling, and 2,250 guineas on two occasions for a brood mare.
