Tenders received by the New Plymouth Harbour Board for the construction of the proposed tug-dredger Ngamotu number 14. From eight to fourteen months is the time for construction and delivery of the vessel.

The Hurworth Hall was well filled on Wednesday night when a dance was held in aid of the hall funds. The arrangements throughout did credit to the committee. The ladies’ committee under Mrs. G. Waters was in charge of the s;»pper arrangements, and this part of the function was right up to standard. Boulton’s orchestra provided the music and Masers. P. Meredith and Mr. J. The alterations to the New Plymouth telephone exchange will probably be completed next week, according to a statement made by the chief postmaster (Mr. B. E. 8. Brodie) at a meeting of the council of the Taranaki Chamber of Commerce last night. Though a number of minor matters would require attention for some time to come, he said, the main portion of the work would be finished next week, and the auxiliary switchboard by that time dispensed with.

Luckily there were no passengers on board one of the New Plymouth Borough Council’s electric buses on Wednesday evening when, it is reported, it overturned while negotiating the hill at Frankley Road on its return trip to town. The bus had proceeded down one side of the hill and was about to accelerate to mount the other when the steering gear broke down and the bus left the road and overturned into the gully. The driver was the only occupant and he escaped serious injury, out suffered painful culs about his hands and arms.

An enjoyable dance, attended by about 150 persons and organised by the pupils who have throughout the year attended evening classes at the New Plymouth Technical College, was held in St. Mary's Peace Memorial Hall on Wednesday evening.. During supper Mr. and Mrs. Skelton were presented with a handsome inkstand in appreciation of their interest in the Old Pupils’ Association. The New Plymouth Beautifying Society desire to gratefully acknowledge the receipt from Messrs. Duncan and Davies of a large number of native trees and azalais fot Baine's Terrace. There was a large attendance at a dance held by the New Plymouth Order of Rechabites on Tuesday evening. Mr. W. Smith was master of ceremonies and the music was provided by Cooper’s orchestra. The New Plymouth Beautifying Society has received a large number of native trees and azaleas from Messrs. Duncan and Davies. They will be planted on Baines’ Terrace, where work is to be continued on Saturday. "Rose Marie” is definitely scheduled for production at the New Plymouth Opera House on Thursday and Friday, January 19 and 20, under the direction of J. C Williamson, Ltd. The title role Mill be played by Miss Marie Bremner. Those interested in the physical wellbeing of girls will appreciate the gymnasium display at the Whiteley Hall on Saturday evening, December 3. u' «n the Y.W.C.A. girls will give an idea of their wintea programme comprising fencing, Sweedish drill, pyramids, etc. Visitors from the Hawera gymnasium class will give jujitsu, dub swinging, etc. Orchestral and other items complete the programme. Mrs. Walker will open the fair at 2.30 p.m., when Christmas novelties, sweets, cakes, etc., will be on sale.

A pleasant afternoon may be spent by young and old at the sale of work to be held at Knox Church, Sackville Street, Fitzroy, to-morrow. The members of the Ladies’ Guild will be i n charge of stalls of all kinds. The daintiest of articles on the fancy stall will appeal as Xmas presents as well as useful articles and garments from the plain stall. Cake, jams, sweets and flowers will also be obtainable. A feature for the children will be a bran tub well filled with good packets and a Xmas tree displaying small things for the children. Don’t forget (he afternoort tea stall.
