CIGARETTES AFTER HOURS
V. SISARICH FINED FOR SELLING. RESERVED DECISION ANNOUNCED. Some time ago a plea of guilty was entered by V. Sisarich to informations laid by Inspector W. A. Cairns, of the Labour Department, charging him with selling cigarettes after 0 p.m. on February 10, and with failure to close his shop" at 1 o’clock on February 12, the statutory half-holiday. Mr. R. W. Tate, S. M., then reserved the question of penalty. The case was brought to a conclusion yesterday when, after hearing counsel in favour of Sisarich, a fine of £5 was imposed on the first charge, and a conviction and discharge recorded on the other. It was urged that Sisarich had supplied cigarettes to customers after he had been taunted for not selling them, and a threat made that if he did not oblige custom would be taken away from bis restaurant. As this was the second offence the Labour Department asked for more than a nominal penalty.
