An unknown Italian entered tho It*' lian Consulate, said he wae seeking * passport, and asked for an interview with the viee-Consul, Count Carlo Mardini, alone. After a few minutes two shots were beard and the attendants, rushing in, found the count huddled in a Chair, mortally wounded in the chest. The assailant made a fierce resistance, firing two shots without effect before he was overpowered and arrested. Count Mardini died in hospital. Received Sept. 13; 7 p.m. London, Sept. 12. The Daily News’ Paris correspondent says Signor Mardini’s murderer obtained an interview, declaring his wife was unable to join him owing to the rigid Italian passport regulations, wherefore he sought advice. It is feared the crime will, further embitter Franco-Italian relations which are strained owing to frontier incidents. M. Poincare, in an effort to prevent increased tension, sent his secretary to the Italian Embassy to express profound regret, and he instructed the ambassador at Rome similarly.
