GENERAL ITEMS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) At a special meeting of tiie Patea Borough Council on August 22, the matter of. renewing the £2500 electric light loan was discussed- The Mayor (Mr. P. IS Finlayson) asked councillors to note that the term of the loan had been increased from 20 to 2<S years, and the sinking fund reduced from three to two per cent. It was resolved to take the necessary steps for renewing the loan for a term of 26 years with « per cent, interest and 2 per cent, sinking fund. On Saturday last an enjoyable dance was held in the Kakaramea Hall, the music being obtained from station -xA, Wellington, per radio. Several loudspeakers were employed, am., although the volume was great, the noise produced bv dancing proved slightly too much for the radio music. Supplementary music was provided by Mrs. A. Carey’s orchestra in the usual excellent style. Looking smart and marching well, the Patea troop of Girl Guides and Boy Scouts assembled last Sunday morning for church parade. Tiie Guides were under Captain T. Gibson, assisted by Lieutenants Masters and Roberts, and the Brownies were under Mrs. Harre and Miss Beamish, while th© Scouts were under Scoutmaster "Whittington and Assistant-Masters Clark and Pauling. There is much sickness in Patea and district, and many cases of measles and* mild influenza have been reported. The local hospital is congested, and with tiie present wet and cold weather tiie position of patients is an unenviable one. Vital statistics for the month of August are as follows, the 1926 figures being given in parentheses: Births 5 (4), deaths 3 (5), marriages 0 (0).
