REVENUE FROM IMPORTS.
BIG DECREASE LAST MONTH. REFLEX OF TRADE DEPRESSION. A considerable decrease of £5913 Is 7d occurred in the Customs revenue collected at New Plymouth during the month ending yesterday, when comparisons are made with the figures for the corresponding month last year. This is attributed chiefly to the fact that during June and July merchants made heavy clearances of tobacco and spirits, in anticipation of an increase in the tariff expected last month, and partly to. the fact that the general trade depression of some months ago, due to the low price of butter-fat, naturally resulted in a curtailment of Home and foreign orders. The Customs revenue for the month of August this year and last year, and also the excise duty on beer, were as follow: CUSTOMS REVENUE. £ s. d. August, 1926 13,841 13 3 August, 1927 7,928 11 8 Decrease £5,913 1 7 EXCISE DUTY. £ s. d.
