ALTERATIONS TO BATHS
IMPROVEMENTS TO THE BUILDING Alterations are to be made to the building of the New Plymouth municipal baths, which was recently damaged by fire, These include the removal of the southern corner used as a tearoom. The architect (Mr. W. N. Stephenson) explained to a Daily News reporter yesterday that this would give space to enable motor ears to turn round without backing up into Kawaroa Park drive. Though designed on simple lines for reasons of economy, the exterior of the Storey and a half building will be of a pleasing appearance, and an improvement on the old structure. It is proposed to use as much of the present timber as possible in re-arrangiug the accommodation to give greater convenience. The entrance porch on the eastern side will opeA cn to a passage running past a small shop direct to the swimming pool, while a tributory corridor will lead to the hot salt water baths. The office will be so situated that the attendant will have a full view of the pool and be able to control the shop and entrance to the hot baths efficiently. The windows of a spacious lounge will overlook the front of the building. Two sunk slipper baths are to be included among the four new ones that are to be installed for hot water, and special attention has been paid to the arrangements for their lighting and ventilation. The remainder of the ground floor will be occupied by a kitchen, a laundry, and. the boiler room, while a suite of rooms for the caretaker, a sitting room and tw-o bedrooms, will comprise the second storey. The Borough Council has approved of the plans and the baths committee has been instructed to call tenders.
