FIRE BOARDS’ CONFERENCE
ALLEGED APATHY OF PARLIAMENT

AVelling-ton,, Aug. 19. The Confereac® ®f Fire Boards assembled to-day. Mr. D. E. Wilkie, who was elected chairman, complained of the apathy of Parliament towards the subject -of the huge annual waste caused by fire, much of which could be prevented. A resolution was carried that the Act should be so amended as to permit of the formation of metropolitan fire boards in Hie four main centres.
A remit was passed to amend the Act to provide for payment of reasonable expenses in connection with the conference; also the establishment of a central fund for the payment of conference expenses. A demonstration of fire-fighting appliances will 'be given to-morrow.
