OPUNAKE NEWS.
METHODIST CHURCH. The quarterly meeting of the Opunake Circuit took place on Wednesday, July 6, in the Methodist Church, Opunake. The Rev. T. Coatsworth presided over a good attendance of officials. The Rev. R. Tapp (Okato) was also present. The circuit steward. (Mr. T. P. Hughson junr.) cordially welcomed the superintendent minister, and wished him a successful term on the circuit. The membership returns were reported at 107. The report of the Sunday School superintendents and Bible Class leaders showed that splendid work was being done amongst the young people. The balance-sheet for the quarter showed that the income almost met the expenditure. Arrangements were made for the visit of the Rev. E. P. Blamires, Young People’s Secretary. The income for foreign missions showed that over £6O had been raised, the effort not yet being completed. An evangelistic mission is to be held at Okato, the holding of missions in other centres being left in the hands of the circuit ministers. Services have been established at Tumahu. The establishing of services at other places requesting services is to be dealt with later. It was decided to purchase a motor car for the use of the superintendent minister, the purchasing of the ear being left in the hands of a committee to act at an early date. The members of the quarterly meeting were entertained to luncheon by the members of th Ladies’ Guild, who were heartily thanked for their hospitality. The next meeting will be held at Rahotu in October.
DEATH OF MAORI LADY.
The death occurred at Auckland on Wednesday night of Mrs. Rangimocke Hohaia, a well known resident of Opunake. Deceased, who was the wifo of Mr. Joseph Hohaia, had been in illhealth for a short time and left for Auckland on Tuesday evening to obtain special treatment, but her death occurred somewhat unexpectedly. Deceased, who was above GO years of age, was the daughter of Tamanohomai, a well-known chief of Taranaki, and the esteem in which she was held is shown by the very large gathering that has assembled at her late home, Eltham Road, to pay her the last honours in characteristic native custom. She is survived by her husband and family of six sons and six daughters. W. and C. C. Hohaia, the two well-knotyn Opunake footballers, are sons of the deceased. The funeral takes plate at Opunake to-mor-row.
