SYDNEY WORKS NEW SCHEME MONEY BACK ON PLACED HORSES. NORMAL PROPORTIONS ALTERED By Telegraph-—Press Assn.—C-pvnght. June 22. The totalisator at tiie Gosfoid races, operating on tire recently introduced regulations, showed some queer results. In one race, although the bookmakers quotation for the winning hoit.e was 4 to 1, the totalisator investors only received their money back. So, although they backed the dinner, they did not win. The only ones who benefited were those who backed the favourite, which ran third, in the ordinary case they would have received less Ilian their investment, but under the new rules they had to receive their money back.. in another race the lust instance occurred oi the totalisator not handling sufficient money to return to each backer the amount* oi his original in vestment. Five hundred and twenty-eight tickete, equalling £132, were issued, but when the regulation I-/2 per cent, had lw»en deducted only £ll5 10s remained for division, whereas £ll6 was required.

A message from Sydney on May 13 gave the follow .ng details oi the new regulations: With a view to popularising the totalisator, the revenue from which for some Lime has shown a decreasing tendency, the Government has framed new regulations. . The chief amendment is that whenever possible all dividends siiull be calculated so as to assure that each investor on a placed horse will receive a return of the investment on w : ch the totalisator is operated. This will ensure that backers of placed horses will at least received their money back. Another amendment deals with the number of divid. nds, and provides that there shall be two dividends if there are not less th n four, and not more than seven starters, and three dividends if there are eight or more starters. Ihe divisor for a’three-dividend race, of the amount available lor distribution, is fixed at 50 per cent, for the first horse, 30 per cent, for the second, and 20 per cent, for the third. The ratio for one and two dividend races will remain unaltered.
