TRAM TICKET AS A CLUE

ARREST FOLLOWS BURGLARY. POLICE ALLEGE ARSON. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, June 22. The house of Henry William McCarthy, Home Street, was broken into last week, and £7 12s and two tram tickets stolen. Information about the missing tickets was supplied to the tram conductors and yesterday a conductor drew the attention of a policeman to a car passenger. The latter left the ear with tiie constable quietly, but made a bolt round a corner. He was recaptured quickly, and to-day appeared in court, charged with breaking, entering and theft. The Chief Detective asked for a remand, saying that other charges were pending. When bail was sought tiie police alleged that a house was broken into ami afterwards set on lire, and tiie bail should lie substantial. The Magistrate fixed it at £5OO. Tiie accused is John Asher, labourer, aged 31.
