DRUIDS’ EUCHRE TOURNAMENT. (From Our Own Correspondent.) There was a good attendance of players at the Oddfellows’ hall on Monday night, when the series of euchre tournaments conducted by the Druids’ Entertainment Committee progressed a further stage. Play was in progress at 20 tablee, and some very keen and interesting games were witnessed. The first prize in the ladies’ division (a sunshine purse) was won by Mrs. C. Cooper with nine games; Mrs. Myhill, with SJ games, being successful in gaining second prize (a pair of towels). The third prize (a week-end case) went to Mrs. Kilbride, with eight games, and the fourth prize (a hair brush) was won by Mrs. Falvey. In the men’s division, Mr. G. Evanoff, with 1014 games, was the winner of the men’s first prize (a travelling rug), whilst Mr. T. Bennett won the second prize (a pull-over) with ten games. Mr. F. Morris, with 914 games, won their third prize ( a pair of slippers), and the fourth prize (a scarf) went to Mr. Page. The consolation prizes were won respectively by Mrs. S. Norris and Mr. R. Stewart. At the conclusion of the card games a very tasty supper was served, and was much enjoyed by those present. RED CROSS SOCIETY. There was a small attendance of members at the annual meeting of the Eltham branch of the Red Cross Society on Thursday night last, Rev. W. W. Avery being in the chair. The annual report stated that the year had been a very successful one. Home nursing classes opened on June 11, 192(3, with a membership of 24, and were conducted by Sister Corkill, of the New Plymouth branch, concluding on September 23 last. Eight members presented themselves for examination, all gaining certificates. Three members, being third year candidates, won medallions. A street stall was held during November, producing flO Bs. Drs. D. H. Saunders and J. I. R. Gray gave interesting lectures to members and the genera) public, which were much appreciated. On December 9, Rev. W. W. Avery presented medallions and certificates to the members who had passed their examination. Sister Corkill was entertained and presented with a small memento from members in appreciation of her good work. First aid classes have commenced with a membership of 34 adults and juveniles, a very satisfactory number. The election of officers resulted as follows: President, Mrs. W. W. Avery; vice-president. Rev. C. H. Isaacson; secretary and treasurer, Mrs. R. B. Foord; committee Lady Carnerose, Mesdames. J. Mitchell C. H. Isaacson, M. Bourke, D. Syme, W. Smith and C. L. Needham, and Rev. W. W. Avery, five to form a quorum. Executive committe: the president, vice-president and secretary. THE GOLF CLUB. The following are the results of the semi finals of the four-ball match,
played on the Eltham links during the week-end: Bary and Hessell beat Stewart and Morton, 5 up and 4; Young and Date beat Abbott and Phillips, 1 up. The final between Bary and Hessell and Young and Dale will probably be' played this week. The competition for the Leo Qutn Cup commences next week-end, and will be continued during the two following week-ends PERSONAL ITEMS. Mrs. L. Nodder, of Auckland and formerly of Eltham, is at present visiting Eltham in connection with the Eltham Operatic Society’s production of “Les Cloches de Corneville,” in which she is taking one of the principal parts. She was tendered a welcome social given by Mr. and Mrs. H. Nodder at Mount View Private Hotel, when speeches were made welcoming her “home.” Songs were rendered by Mrs. A. Beesley, Dr. D. H. Saunders, and Messrs. F. Bnver, J. M. Burns, E. E. Carter and A. Beesley, the accompaniments, being played by Mrs. Beesley and Miss Gubb. Miss L Nodder and Miss Gubb played pianoforte solos. Passengers who left Eltham by Monday morning’s mail train for Rotorua to attend the annual conference of the National Dairy Association included the following: Messis. C. H. White, C. H. Courtney and W. Smith (Eltham); Messrs. R H. Free and E. H. Reeve (Mangatoki), and Mr. A. D. Johnson, (Lowgarth). Mr. and Mrs. G. H. T*. Fitzgerald left by Monday morning’s mail train for Rotorua, where Mr. Fitzgerald will attend the annual meeting of the New Zealand Rennet Company. Major and Mrs. J. A. Dixon have arrived in Eltham from Auckland to take charge of the Eltham Salvation Army Boys’ Home. Mr. A. Tiplady, of North Auckland, who has been spending a holiday with his parents, left for the north on Tuesday.
