YOUTHFUL BURGLARS

AUCKLAND BOY’S ESCAPADE. SEVERAL HOUSES ENTERED. (By Wire —Special to News.) Auckland Last Night. Mother, father and sister went to the races and the boys were hard put to it to amuse themselves. Finally they raided a few houses in the neighbourhood, and made a collection of watches, field glasses, chocolates, mouth organs, crackers, cigarette cards and books. Two of the lads, aged 14 and 13, appeared at the Children’s Court to-day. In a sworn statement one of them said that, as his family had gone out for the day, he got his friend to come over and “play.” At about ten o’clock they rang the door bell of a neighbour’s house to see if anyone was home. No one answered so they climbed through a window and got cigarette cards and crackers. This easy success made them try two other houses, where the hauls included chocolates and field glasses. They looked in all the drawers and cupboards in the houses. A few nights later one of them went to a house at night and collected some cigarette cards and he also entered the home of a playmate one afternoon and took a money box, w’hieh contained about £l. The money was spent on lollies and pictures. The Court committed the younger boy to the care of the Superintendent of Child Welfare, and put the elder one under supervision for two years.
