FRENCH DEPUTY CHARGED

The debate in the Chamber on the subject of an order for the arrest of the Communist deputy, M. Doriot, progressed in an atmosphere of tension, owing to the rumour that M. Doriot would make a dramatic entry, but there was no appearance of him. M. Doriot was last heard of in Moscow. He was sentenced in his absence last year to 18 months’ imprisonment on a charge of anti-militarist propaganda in connection with the war in Morocco. He still has the right of appeal to the Court. There is another prosecution pending against M. Doriot for alleged treasonable conduct and speeches while on a visit to China. The debate was followed by a detieion; “That M. Doriot should be arrested immediately, and returned to France, but was nullified by an announcement that M. Doriot had exercised his right of appeal. Further action was therefore suspended.
