BOY AND GIRL MARRIAGES
MINORS WITH TWO CHILDREN. PLEA FOR THE BASIC WAGE. The days when striplings of 18 led blushing maidens of 16 to hymeneal altars have come again in Sydney, according t.o a local paper. In the Sydney City Council service there ar© two men under 21 years of age, who are married, with two children apicee. Others under 21 are married, with on© child. Recently a lad of 18, who married a girl of 16 years, was able proudly to inform the head of his department that a "visit from the stork was expected at his abode. Such is the position which led Aiderman Holdsworth, M.L.A., to appeal, on humanitarian grounds, recently, for payment of the basic wage to married men in the service under 21 years of age. He told the Finance Committee that the council could do nothing better than help to ameliorate th© stress under which these youngsters and their children were living. "We want good Australians brought up in our midst,” he said, “and if we encourage the young fellows to get married we will be doing something good for the country.” The town clerk was instructed to report on the number of men who would be affected.
