HEAVY GALE AT DUNEDIN
DAMAGE TO POWER LINES STAGGERING FORCE OF WIND. HARBOUR MADE UNWOHKAHTJI By Telegraph.—Press Association. Dunedin, ‘Last Night. A violent north-easterly gale, accomdrl?ng rain > B P ra ng up during last night and raged almost incessantly to-day. At times the force of the gale was staggering, and frequent interruptions occurred in the city’s electrio system. In many places telegraph wires were reported to have fallen, and a warning was issued by the city electrical engineer not to touch any fallen wires . A few cases of houses being unroofed were reported, and a considerable amount of minor damage is also reported, but the extent of it has not yet been ascertained. The port was unworkable owing to the gale, the Waipiata, from Auckland, which arrived outside the Heads, being unable to enter owing to the heavy sea. The s.s. Calm, from Bluff, is believed to be sheltering near the Nuggets. The storm raised a heavy sea in the harbour and several pleasure eraft broke adrift, but none were damaged. The gale showed no signs of abating in the evening. The premises of Messrs. F. and F. Martin, furniture and piano warehousemen, were damaged to the ' extent of £l5O when half of the roof was torn off. The old Arcade Block, owned by the Arcade Company, suffered considerably. Skylights were shattered and some small shops damaged.
