GRAIN IMPORT DUTIES

PROTEST FROM GISBORNE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Gisborne, June The Gisborne grain produce merchants express indignation at what they consider the wrong basis, with reference to the cost of maize production, arrived at by a special committee of the New Zealand Grain, Seed and Produce Merchants’ Federation, appointed to make representations to the Tariff Commission. The committee, considering the importance of the pork and poultry industries, recommended a reduction on the present import duty on maize. The Gisborne merchants consider the estimates quoted do not support the recommendation for a reduction.
