New Plymouth 1927 Winter Show
AND MOTOR EXHIBITION
IGGER, brighter and better than ever, the Taranaki Metropolitan Agricultural Society’s eighteenth annual winter show was officially opened by the Minister of Agriculture (Hon. 0. J. Hawken) at 8 o’clock last night. In spite of a steady downpour of rain, which lasted all day yesterday and well into the night, the public were undeterred from showing their appreciation of the society’s splendid effort, and a large crowd of both town and country people thronged to the show buildings in Gill Street to see Nature's cornucopia brimming within their walls. One glance round the displays in the four commodious halls that comprise the showrooms, convinces the visitor at once that the high stan-
dard set in previous years Jias been surpassed. Never before lia.ve mangolds, turnips and carrots looked so many nor so big; never have the rows of delicate cookery looked so inviting, nor needlework so finely executed; and never has the investor’s genius been so apparent in new and wonderful machinery, nor the tradesman’s art so original and highly developed in producing the many things that come from expert hands. Apart from the massed exhibits of garden produce—every product of the earth it seems—■ and other articles of human consumption or human utility, there is a section of the show de- ' voted to mankind’s pleasure, and a section devoted to things of luxury. The former comprise* th& many side-shows, hoop-las and other
enjoyments whieh go to make all the fun of the fair, and the latter comprising the third annual » motor Olympia—a show in itself whieh is dealt with separately on another page. The motor show is staged by the Taranaki Motor Traders’ Association, and is a credit to all concerned, a revelation, indeed, of the beauty and the luxury of the modern car. A particularly pleasing feature of this year’s show is the amount of space devoted to trade exhibits and the effectiveness with which trade exhibitors are displaying stheir wares to the greatest advantage. Not only do these displays add greatly to the brightness of the show, but they are testimony to the value of the show as an advertising medium.
Competitive sections have drawn keen competition, and in the butter and cheese exhibits, fruit and vegetables, field roots and home industries, photography and art, needle and other fancy work, people vie with one another in attempting to reach the height of perfection. The poultry and pigeon show will not- be opened until to-day. This year the New Plymouth Kennel Club is staging its first dog show in conjunction with the Winter Show, and this will no doubt be an added attraction to visitors. In both utility and fancy sections the birds in the poultry and pigeon classes have reached a high standard of excellence, while amongst the dogs, breeds of all types and variety may be found. ,
