FOOTBALL.

WEDNESDAY COMPETITION. CITY DEFEAT FRASER ROAD. A FAST RAGGED GAME. City (Hawera) defeated Fraser Road at the showgrounds yesterday after loose play by 11 points (three tries, one converted) to five points ( a converted try). Play in the first spell saw some bright back work and more interesting football, but the second half was ar series of scrambles and fruitless attempts to open up back play. Fraser Road kicked off against a stiff cross wind and the first invasion saw the Fraser Road backs in action, but Bishow kicked when he had a chance. Later Cannon led the City forwards to just under the goal, but Mcßeth got offside and Fraser Road cleared. Fraser Road attacked and a series of fumbles and tricky bounces saw them nearly score, but City were penalised and an easy chance was missed. Cannon, McBeth and Champion led City back to the Fraser Road twenty-five, where a free kick was awarded, but the yellows’ kick went astray. Fraser Road attacked for some minutes, and City were defending on their line. D. Whai, on Fraser Road’s left wing, intercepted on three occasions and his centring kicks tested City’s defence, being well followed up by Taniwha and H. Whareaitu. Cannon, Mcßeth and Bryant led City back, and at the twenty-five a great back movement was witnessed, Carncross, Clarke, Townsend and Hay handling nicely, and Hay sent in to Clarke, who hurled himself at the line, but fell short, and a force followed. 11. Whareaitu put in a great solo foot rush to City’s line, where he picked up and passed to J. Pullen, who dived over and converted. Following even play Lay, Goodwin, Hart and Wards were associated in an attack on Fraser Road’s line, and in a race for the ball a Fraser Road player bounced in forcing, and Hart also was unable to ground for a try. From midfield Cannon broke away with the ball, and in a great solo run scored for Carncross to convert and equalise the scores. On changing over, there ensued a long period of dull, even play in midfield, until City scored a lucky try by fast following up owing to D. Whai attempting to line from in-goal instead of forcing. Carncross’ kick failed. Another try came soon after, the City forwards working hard and Hart finishing off with a try in the corner. The kick failed. The game ended with the scores: City 11 Fraser Road 5 Mr. H. G. Whittington refereed. NOKMANBY v. WHAREROA. The match between NbrmanJby and Whareroa, which should have been played at Whareroa, was not played on account of the Normanby team being under the misapprehension that the match was to have been played at Normanby. FIXTURES FOR TO-MORROW. REPRESENTATIVE GAMES. Taranaki v. Wanganui, at Wanganui. Hawke’s Bay v. Wairarapa, at Napier (first Ranfurly Shield challenge). REPRESENTATIVE MATCHES. THE OPENING TO-MORROW. To-morrow will see the first of the season’s representative matches played, when Taranaki and Wanganui will contest their annual fixture at Wanganui, and Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay will do likewise at Hawke’s Bay. Considerable interest attaches to both matches locally, in view of the fact that Taranaki will next month go forth in quest of the Ranfurly Shield. Last year Taranaki set the football world agog by defeating Wanganui by ‘35 points to 8. It is certain that Wanganui will take steps this year to ensure that such a decisive defeat is not administered, whilst Taranaki will also be doing its utmost. Taranaki’s score last year consisted of nine tries, two of which Brown converted, whilst C. Paterson converted one. The scorers were Kivell, Johnson, C. Paterson each two, Stevens, Brown and Robinson one. The Taranaki team to meet Wanganui to-morrow does not differ materially in the forwards from last year. In fact, the only difference is that Graham, who played in the scrum, goes lock in place of R. Paterson and Lusk, who was emergency, goes into the pack. A. Guy is still rover. The inside backs have been altered, Jeffries and Owen replacing Lynskey and Stevens as half and five-eighths respectively, whilst Hohaia and Bourke will replace Falwasser and C. Paterson on the wings. Petty (tull-baek), Brown (centre three-quar-ter), and Johnston (second five-eighths) retain their positions. A. Guy, as rover, also retains his position. It must be conceded that the team, as ft combination, is stronger than last year. So, too, is the Wanganui fifteen. Not one of the backs who did duty against Taranaki last year has been included this year. Darby, who replaces Head as full-back, is considered by many to be in the running for New Zealand honours. The wing three-quar-ters are speedy, including Vangioni, who shaped so well for Wairarapa a few years ago. Fitzgeiald, the first five-eighth, has gained New Zealand honours,. whilst Bellis, the second fiveeighth, is “Moke,” of All Black fame, who is said to be playing as well as ever. Duncan, the half, is a nippy exCollegiate half. In the forwards the changes have been almost as drastic, only two, Leahy and Johnston, retaining their places. There are thus thirteen new men in the teain, though several of them played for Wanganui later last year. RANFURLY SHIELD CHALLENGE. Wairarapa have the honour of being the first to challenge Hawke’s Bay for the shield this year, and in view of the defections the Hawke’s Bay team have met with duriag the year, it will prove of interest as giving an indication of the strength of the shield holders. Wairarapa have been taking the challenge very seriously and have given their fifteen a thorough try-out, a wise precaution in view of the crushing defeat Haweks’ Bay inflicted on Wairarapa on the same date last year, when the ecore was 77 to 14. Wairarapa this year has a much stronger combination,

including the inimitable Cooke, in their backs, and he will make a big difference too, whilst Irvine, Hawke’s Bay hooker, will also wear the- green jersey. Only six of last year’s Hawke’s Bay team against Wairarapa were available to defend the shield this year, but selector N. McKenzie appears to have chosen a strong fifteen nevertheless. His troubles have since been accentuated by the reported defection of Paewai, who has allegedly taken up his residence in Aueklajid. DEWAR SHIELD COMPETITION. The public of New Plymouth are promised an interesting day’s football tomorrow, when the sixth annual tournament for the Dewar Shield, which is open to all teams within the province, will be held at Pukekura Park. The competition for this handsome trophy is always very keen and the public is assured of some sparkling bouts, as the game lends itself to the open and spectacular play that the majority of the teams adopt. Since its inception the competition has been won in order by High School, Star, Toko, Old Boys and Tukapa. With the exception of Toko all the previous winners will make an attempt to win it again. This year fifteen teams have entered, viz., three each froqi Tukapa and Old Boys, two each from Star and High School, and one each from Kaponga, Inglewood, Stratford, Okato and Lepperton. The entries from South Taranaki are again disappointing, only one team (Kaponga), who took part last year, making the trip. Notable absentees this year, too, are the central division junior teams, who were last year represented by five teams, viz., Toko and Celtic each two, and Midhirst one. Eltham and Clifton were also represented last year. For the calibre of the teams entered, however, the public should be assured of a great day’s sport, starting with the opening match at 10.30 a.m. until the final, which is timed for 4.10 p.m.
