CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. MEETING OF EXECUTIVE. The monthly meeting of the executive of the Stratford Chamber of Commerce was held last night. Present: Messrs. J. B. Richards (president), S. Macalister, H. Fleming, W. MacDonald, P. Thomson, D. J. Malone, A. Orton (stationmaster), W. L. Kennedy and E. H. Young. The Hawera Chamber wrote under date of May 14 last advising that a deputation would be visiting Wellington on Tuesday, 17th inst., and had been asked to wait upon the chairman of the Associated Banks regarding the increase in the bank rate of interest. The Hawera Chamber had arranged for representatives from chambers of commerce, commercial and agricultural interests, so as to strengthen the representations that were to be made, and asked the Stratford Chamber to co-operate. The secretary (Mr. W. Power) reported that, as the notice given was too short to call a meeting, he had conferred with the committee and had authorised the deputation to speak on behalf of the chamber to the following effect: “The Stratford Chamber recognises that supply and demand cannot be ignored in the price of commodities or money. That the shrinkage of bank deposits warrants an increase in the rates of interest. That the exercise of economy is an urgent need throughout the Dominion. That the increase in the rate of interest on advances would probably promote economy by minimising advances and checking imports. That the banks are probably in a sufficiently powerful position to reduce advances without the aid of an increase in interest thereon. That if the banks decide to pay the increase of interest on deposits out of their profits instead of passing it on to the borrowers, the growing agitation for a State bank, and the considerable public envy of bank profits, would be somewhat allayed. The secretary’s action was approved. In reply to representations made by the chamber, Mr. J. Pringle, district railway business manager, said that arrangements had been made to place eight foot-warmers in the carriages on | the trains leaving Stratford for Whani gamomona at 7 p.m. on Mondays and Saturdays.—Received. The Minister of Public Works (Hon K S. Wiliam's) wrote saying that it accordance with his promise to a deputation from the chamber, he had put be lore the Minister of Mines their request for investigation of the coal-bearinc areas through which the Stratford Main Trunk railway would pass. Th< Minister of Mines had pointed out tha< it was not the duty of his departmen:

to spend money on prospecting such areas and, moreover, there was no statutory authority, in the absence of a Parliamentary appropriation, to cover the cost, which would empower him to incur such a liability.

The Palmerston North Chamber of Commerce advised that the following resolution had been passed in the hope that it would be endorsed by the Stratford Chamber: “This chamber views with disapproval the demands made by farmers, both in Australia and New Zealand, for embargo or prohibitive duties between the two countries on the direct products of the land. The support of other chambers is asked in requesting the New Zealand Government to continue to improve upon the reciprocal tariff now in force.” The president explained that the chamber had already expressed its opinion on the matter, and it was agreed to advise the Palmerston North Chamber accordingly. The president reported that Mr. Bruce Bevy, Government Agristologist, Would be unable to devote sufficient tittle from his work to deliver lectures to farmers at the present time.

It was decided to endeavour to obtain the date of the proposed visit of the Railway Board to Taranaki. As next year will be the jubilee of Stratford, it was agreed to remind the Borough Council of the fact and to ask that consideration be given to celebrating the event. The chamber expressed its willingness to co-operate.
