JERSEY WEEK OPENS

NEW PLYMOUTH CLUB'S SALE

PRICES IN FAVOUR OF BUYERS. TOP PRICE REALISED 178 J GUINEAS « “Jersey Week” in North Taranaki was opened yesterday, when the New Plymouth Jersey Cattle Club held its annual female sale at the Waiwakaiho showgiound. Weather conditions were none too favourable, and that was probably reflected in the attendance, which was not so large as usual, though buyers were present from North Auckland, Waikato and Manawatu. As Mr. E. Griffiths, the sales manager for Newton King, Ltd., who conducted operations, remarked, when money was plentiful it was the time to sell and when money was scarce was the time to buy. So it proved yesterday, as prices were certainly in favour of purchasers. In all twenty-three lots were disposed of. There was very keen competition for the four-year-old cow Ivondale Black Bess, by Aster’s Golden Lad—lvondale Rainbow Lass, sold by Mr. A. J. Luxton. A show cow, she is a full sister to Irondale’s Golden Rainbow, who was sold som? time ago for 510 guineas. Starting at 100 guineas, she advanced by 10-gUnea bids to 130 guineas, thence by 5 guinea bids to 145 guineas, where bidding hung for a while. Then two prospective buyers raised the price to 150 guineas, and it advanced quickly by- 5-guinea bids to 170 guineas, and then by 2 J-guinea bids to 177 J guineas, where a final one guinea saw her knocked down to J. A. Mitchell, of Longburn. This is the highest price received in this season’s series of sales. Prior to the sale the stock submitted was inspected by a committee comprising Messrs. F. W. Cornwall, P. J. Peterson, A. J. Luxton and H. C. Sampson to ensure that they were up to Standard. A parade was then held of the cows and two-year-old heifers, in which nine took part, and of yearlings and calves in which six took part. Mr. A. Haseltine, of Hamilton, was the judge, and gave, his awards as follow: ■Two-year heifers and cows.—A. J. Luxton’s (Omata) Ivondale Black Bess I; A. J. Luxton’s Crofton Viola, by' Viola’s Golden Laddie (imp.)—Harmon’s Girl, 2; C. H. Weston’s (New Plymouth) Meon Fiona, by Peggy’s Squire—Meon Damorel, 3.

Yearling heifers. —H. C. Sampson’s (Hillsborough) Woodland's Felicie, by Bright Sultan (imp.)—Woodlands Felicity, 1; H. C. Sampson’s Woodlands Duchess of York, by Bright Sultan (imp.)—Woodlands Duchess, 2; H. C. Sampson’s Woodlands Ngia, by Masterman of Woodlands—Woodlands Enigma, 3.

Prior to the opening of the sale, Mr. H. C. Sampson, president of the New Plymouth Jersey Cattle Club, extended a welcome to those present and stressed the point that the cattle being submitted were all of fine quality. He assured those present that there was not one cull amongst the lot, so that intending buyers could disabuse themselves of the idea that breeders used these sales to get rid of their culls. One had only to look at the stock to realise their quality. The arrangements for the sale were again very complete, the stock pavilion providing a commodious and convenient ring. Messrs. K. Kirk and F. Cameron, as auctioneers, lost no opportunity of eliciting bids. Details of the stock sold are as follows : On account of Claude H. Weston.
