DISFIGURING THE COUNTRYSIDE, There will be general sympathy with the .action taken by the Oamaru Beautifying Society in oireularising local authorities with a view to their general co-operation in the prevention of •<r exh’kition of advertisements which 'disfigure or injuriously affect the view 01 rural scenery or the amenities of any place frequented by the’public on account of its beauty or historic interest. Whilst there are not many advertisements of the kind to which exception is taken already io the Dominion, it is wise to create a public opinion which will prevent their toleration. In certain of onr towns there are now erected hoardings, etc., which, if not actually unsightly, certainly do not add to the attractiveness of the locality in which they are erected. They are private property, erected under permission •of the local authority, and are therefore as difficult to remove as any other vest,ed interest. It will be remembered that within the past twelve months the Railway Department, against the wishes of the citizens chiefly concerned, decided to maintain a series of hoardings in what is one of the busiest thoroughfares in the city of Auckland. The only justification for this which has been vouchsafed by the department is its need to earn revenue wherever possible. If public opinion is sufficiently aroused to the importance “of maintaining the elements of interest and beauty in out-of-door life,” such action by a State department or private enterprise would be impossible. These instances serve however, to show that if the erection of unsightly advertisements is not checked, the Dominion may find, as in older countries, that each year makes it more difficult to prevent their increase.
