Fitzgerald, officerjLomfriantl* ing the second battalion of tr.e First Surreys at Gibraltar, paid his usual afternoon visit to the orderly room, accompanied by the adjutant. The latter, when departing, noticed Lieutenant Duffield and asked him why h e was there. Duffield said h« wished* to see the Colonel. The adjutant obtained permission and Duffield entered. Presently shots were heard and the Colonel was found shot in the head. He said: "He shot me. Arrest him.’’ He soon died. Duffield, who admitted his guilt, was arrested and placed in the menial ward.
