Mr. E. Walter, M.P. for Stratford, was a spectator at the Tarata dog trials yesterday. The death of Colonel Robert Owen, commander of the Third Australian Battalion, is reported by a London cable. At yesterday’s meeting of the Tauranga County Council, Mr. R. L. Pearlcss tendered his resignation as county engineer, which was accepted with regret, says a Press Association message. A London message states that Sir Joseph Cook has been instructed to retain the office of High Commissioner until the arrival of General Sir Granville Ryrie, his successor. Air. Collins succeeds Sir T. Coghlan on the Pacific Cable Board. Mr. and Mrs. R. J. Dearc and Mr. and Mrs, H. Gilmore Smith, who have been on a three weeks* motor tour to the North of Auckland, most of which was spent at Paihia, Bay of Islands, returned to New Plymouth on Wednesday evening. Mr. P. C. Garnham, manager of tho Bank of New South Wales, accompanied by Mrs. Garnham, is about to take a short vacation, and intends to journey to Sydney per the S.S. Marama, leaving Auckland on March 14. Mr. A. I. E. Jones, accountant is to act as manager of the branch during Mr. Gamham’s absence.
