EPIGRAMMATIC WISDOM. ¥ Lord Dewar was as epigrammatic as ever when lie discoursed on “Woman” at the O.P. Club Ladies Christmas dinner and dance at the Hotel Cecil, London. Ho was entrusted with the toast of “The Lady Associates,” and made the most of it, according to a report in the Weekly Scotsman. Woman, he said, was Eve in excelsis as well as in epigram. However, he tempered the epigram to her shorn locks and slight apparel by declaring that women to-day are healthier, handsom •, and more beautiful than they have ever been. Lord Dewar, himself a bachelor had also something to say about the bachelor, the bigamist, the Bolsheviks, not to mention the Charleston. The following are passages from his speech: Although women have the vote today, some still continue tv walk off an omnibus looking backwards. The Charleston is sweeping the country with an epidemic of flat feet and knock knees. The quickest way to learn the latest dance motions is to turn over a behive in a ballroom. Some electrify their audiences, other only gas them. Love is an ocean of emotion entirely surrounded by expenses, and a Bolshevik one with features of facial criminality surrounded by whiskers. When a bachelor- flatters himself he knows a woman he flatters himself. Many a bachelor has been wrecked on a permanent wave. You cannot blame a girl who pays 39s for a pair of silk stockings showing 28s worth of them. We see more and more of women each year. The clothes that make the women are the clothes that break the man. Doctors must be in a dilemma to know where to vaccinate to-day to prevent the marks showing. If Mother Eve had known half as much as some of our flappers of to-day what a fool she would have made of that serpent. The first intimation in the Bible of broadcasting was when Adam gave a spare part which developed into a loud speaker. Do right and fear no man, don’t write and fear no woman. If you want to take the conceit out of a man, lead him to a mirror in his bathing suit. Next to the Bible, the greatest civiliser in the world has been the mirror.
