TIMBER TRADE DEPUTATION

DEPRESSION FROM IMPORTATION. By Telegraph.—Press Association Wellington, April 6. A deputation representing timber interests, both employers and employees, and local bodies interested in timber royalties, waited on Mr. Coates and other Minister's to-day. They stressed that there was great depression hi the industry, which was being strangled, and urged increased duties on imported timber. Mr. Coates said the position was very delicate. If New Zealand products could be used in New Zealand very few would disagree with a-duty, so long as there was a competitive element in existence. The Tariff Commission was now inquiring into the timber industry in conjunction with others. The Government would give careful consideration to the representations of the deputation. Mr. Coates referred incidentally to the desirability of regulations with a view to the preservation of New Zealand forests.
