RACING IN AUSTRALIA. SYDNEY PREPARATIONS. By Telegraph— /'ess Assn. —Copyright. Sydney, April 5. Count Cavour arrived in excellent condition and is exercising on the Randwick tracks. Windbag showed no signs of soreness following his hard race In the Rawson Stakes on Saturday. He trotted on the cinder track freely. The champion runs in the Chipping Norton Stakes next Saturday, after which his owner decides whether he competes in the Sydney Cup. WARWICK FARM WEIGHTS. • Sydney, April 5. Additional Warwick Farm weights are:— April Steeplechase.—Pay Day 12.2 (top), Aberfeldy 9.0. TURF TOPICS. (By “Moturoa.”) The funeral of the late Edward Copestake will take place in Wanganui today, leaving Mr. J. Peachey’s residence at 2.30 p.m. Doubtless it will be largely attended by sportsmen admirers of the popular little horseman. • • • • In fine weather the tracks on the new course at Marton are now available for training operations, and J. T. Morris and C. McKay have teams in work there, having removed from Bulls after the Rangitikei meeting last month. It ie expected that the new course will be in good order for the Marton J.C. spring meeting in September, but much depends upon the weather during the winter months. It is expected that the Railway Department will erect a ■loading bank on the northern side of the Marton Junction station, and this will be a boon to trainers from outside bringing horses to the meeting. • * * * Acceptances for the Auckland Racing Club's autumn meeting close on Friday. Weights for the Feilding J.C. Easter meeting are due on the same day. With a number of horses engaged at both Ellerslie and Riccarion this Easter, the appearance of Auckland acceptances is looked forward to with considerable interest. • • • • According to “Kestrel,” Alloway and The Thorne are being worked the reverse way at Wanganui in view of racing at Ellerslie thia month. Alloway

has come on a lot since racing at Bulls—where he ran second—and should give a good account of himself on the northern trip. • • • •

The two-year-olds, Damaris and Thaw, are also being worked the reverse way at Wanganui, and both are infusing a lot'of dash into their gallops. It is a pity that Damaris is a slow beginner, otherwise she might trouble the best of them in the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. Civility continues to “break watches” at Wanganui, and big things are expected of her in the A.R.C. Easter Handiea. (We imagine we have heard that story before!), « • • • Harry Hickey has a big string of horses (13) in work at Hastings at present. Two of the number, High Heather and Purseproud, will probably be given a run at Waipukurau. RACING IN TARANAKI. DISTRICT COMMITTEE MEETING. The Taranaki district committee met last night. Present: Messrs L. A. Nolan (chairman), G. Fraser, S. Pitt, A. Good, H. Washer, J. McLeod and B. 11. Chaney. Apologies for absence were received from J. Gray and D. J. Malone. The Taranaki Jockey Club’s fourteenth Stakes, to be run at the February, 1928, race meeting, was approved. The race carries the same conditions as last year, weight-for age, stake of 500 sovs. The following licenses were conceded and recommended: —Jockeys: S, J. Vincent and T. Tito, both subject to conditions. Apprentice jockey: G. T. Todd. An accident payment was recommended for payment by the general trustees.

A list of fines and a racecourse inspector’s report, in connection with the recent Opunake club’s race meeting, were approved.
