In the seventh round of the boxing contest for the middleweight championship, Dwyer claimed he had been hit low by Edwards (holder of the title) and was given the decision. Bedlam immediately broke loose. Three beer bottles were thrown into the ring and those nearby were showered with broken glass, though no serious casualties resulted. The referee had his left eye, nose and right temple bruised and cut.
