ANGLERS ESCAPE DROWNING
RESCUE FROM STRONG CURRENT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Christchurch, Last Night. Two anglers had a narrow escape from drowning at the mouth of the Rakaia River on Saturday. They were fishing with others on the spit between the sea and the lagoon, formed by the backwater of the river. A heavy sea was running, and an exceptionally big wave washed R. Carney off the spit into the lagoon. His brother, J. Carney, in attempting a rescue, was also washed into the lagoon by another big wave, and both men were in difficulties, being drawn towards the mouth of the river by the current. They were rescued by a party of anglers who had been fishing on the spit some distance away and were brought ashore in an exhausted condition.
