BUILDING FIGURES UP
INCREASE OF OVER 17,000 JANUARY PERMITS TOTAL £26,751. TWO LARGE BUSINESS PREMISES. An increase of £17,686 is shown in the value of the building permits issued by the New Plymouth Borough Council in January, when compared with the figures for the corresponding month of 1926. The figures for the respective periods are £26,751 and £9065. The improvement is accounted for by the commencement of a two-storied block of shops and offices for a Wanganui syndicate on the corner of Devon and Liardet Streets, and by a permit for a two-storied building for Messrs Hooker Bros, on the corner of King and Egmont Streets. Altogether 28 permits were issued, compared with 27 in January, 1926. Last month three permits were for business premises and 11 for dwellings, the rest being accounted for by the erection of garages and by minor alterations. Nine houses were built in January last year.
