STEAMER DELAYED
CELEBRATIONS ASHORE. CREW RELUCTANT TO BOARD. The non-appearance of several members of the crew and the reluctance of others to go on board wan responsible for some little delay in the departure of the steamer Port Napier from New Plymouth on Saturday evening. When at four o’clock the siren sounded for the- return of men on shore leave, only some of them answered the call. Meanwhile “all cleai-” had been signalled, and the vessel was ready to put to sea with but a elender rope ladder connecting with the quay. Resisting the offers of help by their shipiqgtea, some who had leisurely made their way to the wharf after what had apparently been a far pleasanter occupation resolutely declined to board. The sound of the whistle from the bridge for “slow ahead” roused a few to activity, and the ship was near the end of the wharf when all but one, who waved his hand disdainfully, had been hauled on board by willing if impatient hands. As the big ship rounded the breakwater the anchor was dropped. Then on shore began a rounding up, for others were found who. had not even reached the wharf, some of them practically incapable of doing so. Some time later the harbour board launch put out from shore with an unruly and unwilling band who were Anally deposited on board, and at last the good ship sailed.
