PIPES DRY AT WESTOWN

FAILURE OF WATER SUPPLY | USE OF HOSES MAY BE STOPPED POSITION AT THE RESERVOIR. A shortage of water at Westown at oertain times in the day was reported by the overseer (Mr. W. G. Bethell), to the New Plymouth Borough Council last night. The trouble had been occurring for some time, he said. Yesterday morning no water at all was obtainable at Wallath Road, or on the higher levels of Dartmoor. It would be advisable, continued the overseer, to prohibit the use of all garden hoses and any unnecessary water till further notice. According to the pressure guage, as much as 301bs pressure was lost between the hours of 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. During hot weather hoses were then being used. . The Mayor (Mr. F. E. Wilson): The best thing will be to leave it to me to authorise the prohibition of the use of garden hoses. Rain is coming, probably to-night. The meteorologist’s report indicates it. "We are just managing, to carry through at the reservoir,” said the manager (Mr. C. C. Clarke). He had been out there yesterday, he said. Owing to the failure of the water supply, it had not been possible to light a fire under a high pressure boiler on the Wallath Road. Councillor J. Brown recalled that the loan proposal had been turned down. He and other councillors gave several instances of the very free use of water on gardens, and it was decided to leave further action in the hands of the Mayor. It was mentioned that it was illegal to use a hose propped up and left unattended.
