It was resolved that the Seaside Committee notify the Domain Board that in the event of the county council agreeing to open the old road to the domain, they were prepared to assist in clearing the gorse. Weather permitting, it was agreed that Tuesdays and Thursdays of each week be the dates upon which the working bees should meet. GENERAL ITEMS. A very pretty wedding was solemnised in the Anglican Church, Urenui, on Wednesday last, the contracting parties being Miss Hilda McCracken, of Urenui, and Mr. C. Bredow, of Douglas, and formerly a resident of this district. The Rev. G. H. Gavin conducted the ceremony, and Mrs. A. Thompson presided at the organ, whilst there was a large attendance of friends of both the bride and bridegroom. The bride, who was given away by her step-father, Mr. C. Rumbal, looked charming in ivory panne velvet, the bridesmaids, Misses Hill and Peggy Smith, being also attractively at-, tired, the former in bois-de-rose, and the latter in apricot crepe de chine. The bridegroom was attended by Messrs W. McCracken and Walters, and the former’s present to Mr, McCracken was a wristlet wateh, to the bride also a wristlet watch, and to the bridesmaids a signet ring and gold armlet. Mr. McCracken also presented to his sister a beautiful fur coat. The handsome bouquets were a gift from Mrs. Percy Smith, of Pungarehu, whilst the wedding cake, which was admired by all, was the work of Mrs. C. Henwood. The parents of the bride and bridegrooin, Mrs. McCracken and Mrs. Bredow, were becomingly attired in brown, and amongst the visitors present were Mrs. Rumbal, Hawke’s Bay, and also the father and sister of the bridegroom, Mr. Bredow and Mf-s. Betts.

At the conclusion of the ceremony an adjournment was made to the hall, where a sumptuous repast had been laid out in the supper room. This was beautifully decorated, a huge wedding bell being suspended in the centre, with coloured streamers of white and violet, together with flowers, ete. During the proceedings the Rev. Gavin proposed the health of the bride and bridegroom, wishing them every future happiness. The latter suitably responded, and Mr. Rujnbal thanked all those present, on behalf of Mrs. Rumbal and himself, for their splendid presents, and also those who had sent congratulatory telegrams. ’ Mr. W. Joll also wished the happy couple every success. . Other toasts were honoured, and at the conclusion of the repast the happy pair departed on their honeymoon trip to Rotorua and Auckland. In the evening dancing was held in the hall, songs being rendered by Misses Gibson and Sheard and Air. V. Simpson, whilst the ' music was contributed by Mr. Edwin and Mrs. Salway. After dancing, the guests adjourned to the residence of Mr and Mrs. Rumbal. where they were entertained to supper, thus bringing to a conclusion a most successful function. Before departing, Mr. G. Salway, on behalf of those present, thanked the host and hostess for their hospitality. Mr. Rumbal suitably acknowledged the compliment. Miss Joyce Musker, who has been spending her midsummer vacation with her parents at Waitoitoi, left on Saturday per mail train from Waitara to resume her scholastic duties at Martinborough. Amongst the week-end visitors to Waitoitoi were Mr. Hazelton, manager of the Bank of New South Wales. Inglewood. Mr. H. Thompson, also of Inglewood, Mrs. Grainger and Misses Oliver and Corcoran, New Plymouth. SOCIAL AND DANCE. Quite an enjoyable little dance took place in the Mimi schoolroom on Thursday evening last, in aid of the funds of the tennis club. Pukearuhe and Urenui contributed a good quota of visitors, who enjoyed themselves thoroughly, although the weather at present is somewhat hot for dancing. Miss Hannah Edwin supplied the music, extras being

contributed by Mrs. G. .Salway and Mr. A. Smith, whilst Messrs Zimmerman and P. Skelton carried out the duties of M.C.’s in an efficient manner. Supper was handed round during the evening.

All the formalities in connection with the galloping and trotting races to be held at the forthcoming gathering of the Uruti Beaeh Picnie Club on March 19 have now been complied with, and the programme of events will be issued during the coming week. Some slight alterations have been made this year, the Mimi and Urenui trots benig confined to horses within the boundaries of the Mokau and Waitara Rivers, whilst the Farmers’ Plate, although still a post entry event, has been made open to all. This race will, no doubt, attract a large nomination. From all accounts there will be more local horses competing on this occasion than ever, whilst promises of support have been received from other centres. Last year’s gathering was one of the. most successful yet held by the elub, and every effort is being made to ensure that the forthcoming meeting will be even more efficiently conducted, as several improvements to the surroundings are being contemplated. In connection with the proposal to hold the Awakino and Uruti gatherings within a week or so of one another, word has been received from the former chib that although for various reasons the change cannot be brought about this season, members quite agree that it will be in the interests of both clubs that this should be done, and that it is intended to apply for a date in March, 1928, either a week or so before or after the Uruti Club’s races. The Awakino Club are. to be congratulated upon falling in line with the proposal, and it is to be hoped that they will be rewarded with larger nominations and an increased attendance at their next gathering. IMPROVING RECREATION GROUND. It is understood that the Urenui Football Chib have donated the sum of £5 towards the cost of re-opening the old road leading to the recreation ground from the Main North Road, opposite the Maori pah. The sports elub have also signified their intention of contributing £lO towards the same object, whilst the Seaside Society, who are not in a position to render financial assistance, are willing to assist in clearing the gorse, and have notified the Domain Board to this effect. It is hoped, provided the county council entertains the proposal, to. have the road opened in time for the forthcoming sports gathering, thus enabling motorists to take their cars right to the grounds. The first round in connection with the Ferguson Cup tennis competition was completed in the southern division on Saturday last, when Urenui journeyed to the Uruti courts to play their fixture with the latter club. The visitors do not seem to be up to their last season’s form this year, and were defeated by exactly the same margin as were Waitoitoi on the previous Saturday, viz., 18 sets to 1. However, although the weather was extremely hot, they enjoyed the trip thoroughly, and were most hospitably entertained by the Uruti players. The position of the teams now stands as follows: Uruti, won two games; Waitoitoi, one; Urenui, nil. The second rounft commences next Saturday, when Mimi and Urenui meet on the court of the former. A start was made in carting. the machinery etc., in connection with the oil works at Okoke. Besides being nominated for a couple of races at Hawera this week, Mr. M. G. Glassford’s Acre—Bell Boyne gelding has been nominated for the Timaru and Omata Hack Handicap at the forthcoming meeting of the Taranaki Jockey Club. Another Waitoitoi representative, Onward, by Hallowmas —lona, owned by Mr, A. Zimmerman, has left for New Plymouth to put on the final touches before the meeting. The chestnut mare is engaged in the Timaru Hack Handicap on the first day, and the Stewards Handicap and Omata Hack Handicap on the second. The usual monthly meeting of the Ati Awa Troop of Frontiersmen was held in Urenui on Friday evening last, Comrade J. G. Fitzgerald (troop-leader) presiding over a good attendance of members. Two candidates were proposed for admission, and it was decided that at the next meeting a match be arranged on the troop’s miniature

range, teams to be chosen that evening, when it is hoped there will be a good muster of comrades.
