KAPONGA NEWS

(From Our Own Correspondent.) The town is still very quiet, as large numbers of residents are still away and many farmers are busy hay-making. Ou New Year’s Day and the Monday following, practically everyone who could made a journey to the attractions round about, the majority going to the Stratford races. The Opunake beach was a favourite with many, the motor-lorry run by a Kaponga firm being well filled on leaving here. The weather was not kind on the Monday for holiday-makers. A general meeting of the Kaponga Cycle Club was held on Wednesday evening, the president, Mr. A. Melville, presiding over a fair attendance of riding and honorary members. The question of holding races on Saturday or Thursday afternoons was brought up, the secretary stating that several members from the Stratford Club would ride if they decided to change. After a brief discussion and the reading of several letters from members of the club from outlying districts ,it was decided to adhere to the holding of races on Saturday afternoons. The opening day for a series of six fortnightly races for the silver cup presented by the club for competition among riders was decided. January 15 wa« chosen as the starting off day for the first round, the first three races of the series to be twice round the Palmer Road block, and the remaining three to be left in the hands of the executive committee to decide. Mr. W. Egarr, of the Inglewood Club, issued an invitation to Kaponga members to join the members of the Inglewood Club in training exercises at Inglewood ou Sunday week. The Rev. A. Blakemore left this morning for Fitzroy, where he will exchange pulpits with the minister in charge there for two or three weeks. Mr. J. Tyaek returned from his holiday visit to the Hawke’s Bay district bv the mail (rain last evening. Mr. L. Des Forges, a one-time resident of Kaponga, was a visitor over the Christmas and New Tear holidays.
