EMPIRE’S RICHEST WOMAN
WILL OF LADY STRATHCONA. The will of Lady Strathcona, which has been lodged with the Sheriff Clerk of Argyll, proves her to have been the wealthiest woman in the British Empire. The gross value of her estate is given as £6,749,231, the highest left by a woman in the history of the Empire. Her wealth came to her from her father, the “Grand Old Man of Canada,” to whose title she succeeded by special remainder in 1914. Death duties will bring £2,166,780 of her fortune to the State. It is not long since the will of the then wealthiest woman in the world was proved.—Mrs. S. V. Harkness, an American, who left £17,000,000. Other big fortunes left by women of recent years are: Mrs. John Rylands, £3,448,692; Miss Ellen Morrison, £3,000,000; Miss Alice do Rothschild, £1,500,000; Dame Elizabeth Francis Ogilvy-Dalgleish, £l,012,252. Lady Strathcona’s movable estate in Great Britain is valued at nearly £4,000,000. The trustees named are her two sons, the Hon. Donald Stirling Palmer Howard (who succeeded to the title) and the Hon. Arthur Palmer Howard and Mr. James Garson, Edinburgh. Chief among the legacies to personal servants are £4OOO to Lady Strathcona’s housekeeper, £4OOO to her nurse and £2OOO to her secretary.
