THE AMERICAN NAVY

ECONOMY IN APPROPRIATIONS. By Telegraph—Press Assn.—Copyright. Washington, Jan. 3. The Naval Appropriation Bill, carrying 324,394,680 dollars, which is nearly 10,000,600 below the present appropriations, has been reported to the House and is erpccted to be duly passed. Heeding the President’s request for economy tho committee asked for no appropriations for three cruisers and two giant dirigibles and left the Navy personnel at the present figure of 82,500. The recent proposals for 10 cruisers, approved by President Coolidge, stand independently in another Bill, calling for no actual appropriation of funds. Hence in the present situation there is no actual demand for money for the new fighting craft, though it may develop as the session progresses.

It was officially announced on March 1 last that the warships owned by the leading Powers were as follow: —

United States 543 British Empire 444 Italy 247 Japan ....... 222 France 219 Russia 176
