TARANAKI TOURNAMENT. PLAY OPENS TO-DAY. The Taranaki Lawn Tennis Association’s New Year tournament opens on the New Plymouth and Rotokare Clubs’ courts to-day, play commencing at 9 a.m. on the New Plymouth courts. Over 100 players are competing in the various events, good entries having been received in every section. The New South Wales team, which is competing in the tournament, arrived in New Plymouth from Auckland, via Te Kuiti, yesterday afternoon. The team includes Mr. F. Peach (captain), Dr, A. L. North, Messrs. N. Peach, J. McCausland, J. Fitzgerald, C. Brewster, and M” E. B. McKoy (manager). Misses N. Lloyd and J. Watson, of Sydney, who won the Dominion ladies' doubles championship at Auckland, and are ompeting here also, arrived by ’’ s. Amongst the prominent players of the Dominion who are taking part arc N. Wilson, Peacock and Malfroy ( Wellington), Atmore (Otaki), Wallace (Taranaki), W. Pearse (South Island). D. G. France (Wellington), Lampe (Wanganui), Wheeler (Wellington), Haege (Victoria), Martin (Masterton) and Dr. Christie (Wanganui). France, Lampe and Haege, whose entries were not received until fairly late, have been particularly prominent in tennis circles during recent times. France is well known as one of New Zealand’s leading players. Both Lampe and Haege played spectacular tennis at the Taranaki tournament last year, and Haege showed by his performance at Auckland that he has lost none of his form. Amongst the lady competitors not already mentioned are Miss Barltrop, top lady at Feilding, and Miss Myers, the Wanganui lady champion. The lawns are in good order. Play will continue until Saturday. Special buses, will pass the courts en route for Rotokare, while attention has been paid to seating accommodation for. a large crowd. Morning and afternoon tea will be procurable. PLAYERS FOR TO-DAY. The following competitors are required to be at the New Plymouth courts at 9 o’clock this morning:— Men.—Dr. North, McCausland, Pryke, D. Richards, J. J. Valentine, H. Dykes, N. Peach, F. Peach, Ballantyne, Watson, Pease, N. W. Knofflock, C. J. Crofts, R. Ross, Austin, L. Christie, Harrison, Barnes, J. and .G. Moline, Stace, J. Ewart, A. Dickie. Ladies.—Mrs. Smith, Misses Malcolm, A. Greig and N. Dell, Mrs. Marshall, Dr. Atmore, Misses F. and D. Baker and Godfrey, Mrs. Grant, Misses Walker, E. Ballantyne, E. B. Nutting, V. Shield, and B. Gayton, M. Nutting and B. Lobb. Some of the above players will be required to play at Rotokare courts, but must report at the New Plymouth courts first. The first ’bus for Rotokare leaves the New Plymouth courts, Vivian Street, at 9.15 a.m. Only matches in the boys’ and girls’ singles and men’s B grade handicap doubles will be played at the Rotokare courts. Players will bring their own score sheets back from the Rotokare courts to the New Plymouth courts, where all the results will be posted up. AUCKLAND TOURNAMENT. RAIN PREVENTS PLAY. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, Last Night. Rain to-day prevented the opening of the Auckland provincial championship tennis tournament. It is hoped to commence play to-morrow. FINAL MATCH IN PARIS. Received Jan. 3, 5.5 p.m. Paris, Jan. 2. In the final of the covered courts championship Lacoste beat Landry 8 6, 6—2, 6—o.
