SERIOUS MOTOR SMASH. YOUNG MAN’S LEG BROKEN. As a result o£ an. accident between Ngaere and Eltliam on Sunday night a young man, named Ivan Hart, was admitted to the Stratford publie hospital at 10.30 o’clock suffering from two compound fractures of the right leg. Inquiries last evening showed that his condition was very critical. Hart was riding a motor cycle and near Ngaere a collision occurred between his vehicle and a motor ear. GENERAL ITEMS. On Sunday night the Citizens’ Band held a concert in the King’s theatre. There was a fair attendance and the programme, which was as follows, was much appreciated: Songs, “Turn Ye to Mo” and “She is Far from the Land,” Miss Lunan; “Ave Maria” and "My Treasure,” Miss Massey; “Vale” and “I Did Not Know,” Mr. Reid; "When the
Ebb Tide Flows” and “Where the Hielan’ Meets the Low,” Mr. J. Duncan; cornet solo, “Just a Little Cottage Small.” The band played selections from “William Tell,” and the “Outpost” and “rit. Kilda” marches . At about 3 o’clock yesterday morning a fire was discovered in the corner of an unoccupied bedroom in the Midhirst Hotel. Fortunately the outbreak had not then assumed serious proportions and very little damage was done except a burnt patch in the wallpaper. The origin of the fire Is unknown. An enjoyable programme of selections and marches was given in Broadway last night by the Ponsonby Boys’ Band. Despite the showery weather, a large crowd gathered and gave the band a good reception. The heavy rain yesterday afternoon, caused some doubt whether the large number of motor cars in the parking areas at the racecourse could be driven away safely. The club supplied a team of horses in ease- of emergency, but they were not needed.
Ensign and Mrs. Douglas, of Stratford Salvation Army Corps, leave on January for Marton, where they have been transferred. Adjutant and Mrs. Ball,
of Te Arolia, have been appointed to Stratford.
On New Year’s Day, the Salvation Army held an enjoyable field day in Stratford. The divisional commander, Colonel Carmichael, conducted a service and music was supplied by the combined bands from aS parts of Taranaki.
Rain fell in Stratford on fourteen days in December, a total fall of 8.17 inches being recorded. On the 14th, 2.3 inches fell and on the 12th, 2.07 inches. All the other falls were less than one inch. The traffic officers stationed on Broadway at the Fenton and Began streets intersections on race day report that the traffic was well behaved, and only one accident occurred when a motor cycle stopped In front of a car and was struck by the latter. No damage was done.
