STRATFORD RACING CONCLUDED

WET WEATHER CONDITIONS PREVAIL MALONE MEMORIAL TO LADY ANSTRUTHER TIP TREE WINS THE NGAERE HANDICAP Weather conditions were decidedly unfavourable for the concluding day of the Stratford Racing Club’s annual meeting yesterday, but fortunately it was fine in the morning and there was again a very large attendance, whilst the totalisator receipts kept up well. The going was on the heavy side) nevertheless the racing was interesting, fields being good and finishes in most cases close. The principal races went to Hawera trained horses, Mr. A. D. Laing’s Lady Anstruther decisively defeating a good field of eight in the Malone Memorial, whilst Mr. B. Cleland’s Tip Tree, which was making its debut in open company, scored from a field o“f six in the Ngaere Handicap.

ANOTHER LARGE ATTENDANCE ONE FAVOURITE SCORES. TOTALISATOR HOLDS UP WELL. The club was unfortunate in regard to weather for the concluding day, rain in the afternoon making matters decidedly unpleasant underfoot. Still it was fortunate for the club that the weather was fine in the morning, as it enabled another very large crowd to assemble. Indeed, the attendance for the two days 1 , must almost have created a record for the club. The gate takings for the first day were about £5O more than for the first day last year, whilst 5000 books were sold. Yesterday’s gate figures were not available, but all the books were sold. The nominations and acceptances fees totalled £948, which is approximately £6O more than last year. The financial success of the meeting is therefore assured, especially as the totalisator investments kept up remarkably well, the staff under Mr. O'Callaghan being kept busy. They handled £25,853, as compared with £29,423 for the corresponding day of last year, a decrease of £3570. The investments for the two days totalled £56,034, as compared with £60,742, a decline of £4708, which is the smallest decrease to be chronicled by any club in the holidays. The innovation of providing windows inside for 10s tickets for ladies was very popular, these windows handling £5128 out of the £30,181 put through the machine on Saturday. From the viewpoint of the sport provided the meeting must rank as highly successful. There were good fields in every race, and close finishes in the majority of them, a tribute to the work of the handicapper, who again had the public guessing, only one first favourite scoring. Mr. A. Morse, at the barrier, against effected some splendid walk up starts, whilst Mr. C. H. Washer, in 'the judge’s box, hoisted the numbers promptly and correctly. The rain of Sunday, together with a light shower prior to the first race, had made the course holding, and with the rain that set in after the third race the track cut up badly and this added to the difficulties of speculators. Nevertheless, the crowd was a distinctly goodhumoured one. The principal event, the Malone Memorial Handicap, attracted a field of eight, and it was won handsomely by the Hawera-owned and trained mare Lady Anstruther, which was always well placed and finished very strongly. The Ngaere Handicap, the open six, attracted a useful field of six, and it was won by the Hawera-owned and trained Tip Tree, which finished in convincing fashion. This -was Tip Tree’s second win at the meeting, the half brother to Monaghan having won the County Hack Handicap on Saturday. The Auckland horse, Modest Boy, which won the Trial Hack Handicap on Saturday, was also a double winner, accounting for a good field in the Electric Juvenile. There were no untoward incidents to mar the day’s enjoyment, and there was only one inquiry, the stewards being called together to consider the alleged interference of Bonogne with Gaillard in the Ngaere Handicap, but after hearing the evidence no action was taken. The arrangements for the conduct of the meeting were again perfect, so that the races were run off well to time. The Stratford Citizens’ Band again added its quota to the day’s enjoyment. President S. Pitt, Secretary W. Power and their committee and stewards well deserve the congratulations showered on them regarding the success achieved. HOW THEY RAN DESCRIPTION OF THE RACING. THE SWELL WINS LIKE A CHAMPION. The seventeen carded faced the barrier. The public were undecided as to the merits of Lady Acre, Midnight Camp and Anolo, but finally seut them out in that order, with 48 tickets separating the trio. Coma and The Swell were the best backed of the others. A good despatch saw Erin-go-Bragh smartest out from the Swell and Midnight Camp. When the field settled down Erin-go-Bragh was still in front from Midnight Camp, Advance Camp, Yaqui, Lady Estelle and Romantic. At the turn Erin-go-Bragh was still in the lead from Yaqui, Advance Camp and Midnight Camp together, followed by Dainty Pearl, Whisogne, Lethal, The Swell and Lady Estelle together. Erin-go-Bragh was the first to turn for home, with Advance Camp next, followed by Midnight Camp, Whisogne, Lethal and Lady Acre. Once headed for the .winning post The Swell came through like a champion to win easily by one and a half lengths from Erin-go-Bragh, with heads separating Advance Camp and Midnight Camp. Then followed Whisogne, Anolo and Lady Estelle.

CLOSEFIRE AT LAST, The seven carded started in the Toko High Weight Hack Handicap, in which the public went solidly for Blend, the Stratford horse carrying over four figures and as much as Fair Abbey and Closefire combined. Niblick was the best backed o e the others. Blend was quickest out from Closefire, Winsome Boy, Niblick and Whetuhine, but when the field settled down Winsome Boy had command from Niblick, Blend, Whetuhine, Closefire, with Tukahi last. Approaching the back Niblick was on terms with Winsome Boy in the van, followed by Closefire, with Blend and Whetuhine together next, and Fair Abbey and Tuhaka last. Approaching the home turn Niblick held a slight advantage from Winsome Boy, Closefire, Blend and Whetuhine. ' Closefire led into the straight from Niblick, with Winsome Boy next, followed by Blend, coming fast, and Whetuhine. In the run home Closefire drew away and, although Blend made a game effort, the favourite could make no impression on the leader, who won nicely by two lengths, with Fair Abbey two lengths away third, a head in front of Niblick. Then followed Winsome Boy, Whetuhine and Tukaha. LADY ANSTRUTHER WINS WELL. Vivo was the only defection from the Malone Memorial Handicap, leaving a field of eight. The public sent Bright Day out favourite, the Waikato horse carrying 150 tickets more than The Lamb, who was only separated by a few tickets from Monaghan, Glengariff and Pouma. Lady Anstruther was also well supported. A good start saw Pouma quickest to begin from The Lamb, Pop Off, Lady Anstruther, Bright Day, Crossfire and Glengariff. Entering the back The Lamb had taken the lead from Pouma, with Pop Off next and Bright Day handy, followed by Lady Anstruther, Crossfire and Monaghan, with Glengariff tailing the field. At the half mile The Lamb was still in front from Pouma, Pop Off and Bright Day, with Lady Anstruther and Crossfire next and Monaghan moving up. Approaching the home turn The Lamb was still in front from Pouma, Monaghan and Lady Anstruther, with Pop Off next. The Lamb was etill in the lead when the field straightened up with Monaghan and Crossfire together next, followed by Lady Anstruther and Pop Off. In the run home The Lamb was soon done with and Lady Anstruther moved to the front and went on to win nicely by three lengths from Monaghan, who came fast over the last bit, Bright Day and Crossfire, heads separating the trio. The Lamb was fifth, with Pop Off close up and Pouma and Glengariff together last. BILLIKINS SPRINGS A SURPRISE. The withdrawal of Branson, Baby Bun, Eka, Yaqui, Tangerine and The Swell reduced the field in the Strathmore Hack to twelve. Helen was sent out favourite, carrying 133 more tickets than Bevis, with Erin-go-Bragh and Toapaiti the best backed of the others. Billikins was the quickest to show out from Bevis, Macroom, Toapaiti and Arch Arrow, but when the field settled down Bevis was just in front of Billikins, Macroom, Toapaiti, Erin-go-Bragh, Monsogne and Helen. Bevis and Billikins turned for home almost on terms, and a great run home ensued. Fifty yards from the post Bevis appeared to gain tlie advantage, but Billikins bung on gamely and got the verdict by a bare head. Monsogne was four lengths away, a head in front of Macroom, and then followed Whenuanui and Dobbin. Sea star lost his rider as the field left the barrier. FAVOURITE WINS THE HURDLES. The eight carded faced the starter in the Makuri Hack Hurdles, and the public made no mistake, sending Glencairn out with 300 more tickets than Tanakana, the next in demand, with Rehutai and Uralla also strongly supported. After a false start Rehutai was first to show out from Tanakana and Festive. Rehutai was quickest to negotiate the first obstacle from Tanakana, Uralla, and Festive, but passing the stand Uralla took the lead from Rehutai, Tanakana, Take Take, Sea View and Lady Estelle. Uralla was still in front entering the back stretch, but Glencairn had run into second berth, with Rehutai next, followed by Tanakana and Take Take. At the half mile Glencairn assumed. command from Uralla and Tanakana, with Rehutai next, and Uralla struck the next fence hard, dropping back. At tho turn Tanakana and Glencairn were together in the van, separated from Uralla and Rehutai together by a gap of four lengths, and then came Sea View. Glencairn and Tanakana took the last obstacle practically on terms, and a hotly contested run up the straight ensued, the pair contesting the whole journey for Glencairn to gain 1 the verdict by a neck, the only favourite to score at the meeting. Sea View was twelve lengths away third, just in front of Rehutai. Then followed Take (Take and Uralla, with Festive last.

MODEST BOY WINS AGAIN. Lady Desmond, Helen and Monsogne were the withdrawals from the Electric Juvenile, leaving a field of eight. Eka was made a hot order, carrying as much as Baby Bun and Atapai combined, with good support for Modest Boy. Eka was quickest away from the barrier rise, followed by Atone, Baby Bun and Modest Boy. At the half mile Eka was still in the van from Modest Boy, Baby Bun, Atone and Atapai. Eka was two lengths clear of Modest Boy and Baby Bun as the field turned for home. Eka and Baby Bun, however, ran out wide, with tire result that Atone and Atapai. momentarily took command. Eka again drew away to have a length advantage, but with half a furlong to go Modest Boy and Baby Bun put in a strong claim, and the former, finishing up well, won by a long length. Atone, three lengths away, got up to beat Eka out of a place. Atapai was fifth and Aeushla sixth. TIP TREE IN OPEN COMPANY. Defections reduced the field in the Ngaere Handicap to six, The Lamb, Papaponga, Benzora, Lady Desmond and Dobbin being the withdrawals. A good betting race saw Pelham wind up about £3O better backed than Tip Tree, with Bright Knight, Bonogne and Gaillard all solidly supported, less than 200 tickets separating the quintette. Gaillard was first out and led over the early stages from Bonogne, Bright Knight, Tip Tree and Pelham. At the half mile Gaillard was just clear of Bonogne, with Bright Knight handy, followed by Tip Tree and Pelham. Approaching the turn Bonogne and Gaillard were on level terms, with Tip Tree next, followed by Bright Knight. Bonogne held a slight advantage from Gaillard into the straight, but once straightened up, Tip Tree came with a rattle on the outer, and, catching tlie leaders at the distance, went on to win by one and a half lengths from Bonogne, which beat Gaillard by a similar distance. Bright Knight was fourth and Pelham last. BEVIS WINS AT LAST. Tip Tree, Vivo, Acred and Arch Arrow declined their engagement in the County Hack, which was run in tlie rain, leaving eleven to face the starter. An oven betting race saw Sovena sent out favourite, carrying three more tickets than Manly and twelve more than Macroom. Branson, Grand Lupin, Maveelish, Blue Peter and Bent were all well supported. Macroom was first to show out from Orcades and Bevis, but after a furlong Bevis took the lead from Orcades and the pair were never headed. At the half mile Macroom was running third, followd by Manly, Grand Lupin, Bent, Winsome Boy and Branson. There was little alteration at the turn save that Grand Lupin and Bent were just behind Macroom in fourth and fifth positions. Bevis turned for home clear of Orcades, followed by Bent, Grand Lupin and Macroom. In the run home Sovena put in a claim, but could make no impression on the leaders, Bevis gaining the verdict by two lengths from Orcades, with Sovena four lengths further back just clear of Grand Lupin. Bent was fifth and Branson next. DETAILS OF THE RACES. CARDIFF MAIDEN HANDICAP, of 150 sovs; second 30 sovs, third 15 sovs. from the stakes. Six furlongs. 5 R, Johnson’s b.g.
