DESCRIPTION OF RACING. GOOD SPORT PROVIDED. ARCHENO WINS OPENING EVENT. (B_i Wire—Special to News.) Auckland, Jan. 1. The opening event, the Ellerslie Handicap, attracted all the acceptors except Bohl Front. In a good betting race Antrim Boy was the favourite, with Haze, Arclieno, Ngarara and Nucleus all receiving good siip|x>rt. From the harrier Antrim Boy ami Arclieno were first to show out and the pair led the field into the straight. In the concluding

stages Arclieno drew out to win nicely from Quondong, who finished, well, with Lord Guy a good third. Haze, who was always well placed, finished fourth.

DOREE AFFECTS SURPRISE. Chelone was the only withdrawal from the Midsummer Handicap. High Finance was made a good favourite, with Cosmetic and Royal Ceres best backed of the others. Cosmetic and High Finance were the early leaders from Carinthia, Melissa and Royal Ceres. Turning into the straight High Finance was in front, but in the final stages Doree came along with a good burst to win nicely from Melissa, With Thaw a good f third and Carinthia fourth.

KARAMU WINS HURDLES. The New Year Hurdles saw Highway installed favourite, with Rangatahi, Pentagram, Royal Form. Wedding March and Cureaform (bracketed) all meeting with good support. Royal Form and Karamu were in front over the first hurdle, Gold Rep falling at the second. Royal Form, Daddy’s Girl and Karamu were leading at the third obstacle, where Highway fell. In the concluding stages Karamu went out well clear of Daddy’s Girl. Pentagram and Royal Form. Holding his own in the straight, Karamu went on to win handily from Pentagram, with Daddy’s Girl a fair third and Rangatahi fourth.

COUNT CAVOUR UNLUCKY. The Auckland Racing Club Handicap saw 18 starters parade. Eden hall being the only withdrawal. Star Stranger was favourite, slightly better backed than Te Monanui. with Desert Glow. Mask and Count Cavour fairly well supported. Day Guard and Clarinda were first way, but passing the stand the order was Day Guard. Papatu, Oreum, Clarinda, Barometer and Count, Cavour. Down the back stretch Footfall made up much ground, running up to fifth position, just in front of Barometer and Count Cavour. Entering the straight Oreum led from Clarinda, Day Guard, Footfall Star Ranger, Desert Glow and Count Cavour. Drawing away at the distance Footfall withstood a strong challenge from Count Cavour to win narrowly, with Te Monanui close up third. Desert Glow was fourth. Count Cavour was rather unlucky in the race or he might have got closer if he did not win.

COMMENDATION WINS EASILY. The Great Northern Derby proved a good thing for Commendation. His injury early in the week proved to be very slight and he was reported to have subsequently galloped a round in record time. He was always a firm favourite, carrying about 4000 more tickets than Lysander, the second choice, with Battlement and True Blood next in demand. The race needs little description. Lysander and Commendation led the field io the straight, where Commendation drew %ut to win very easily. Lysander finished on well to get second place, a neck in front of Alloway, with Seatown fourth. The winner showed himself to be a high-class colt.

THE HAWK WINS STRONGLY. The Newmarket Handicap saw 14 sprinters parade, King Merv being the only withdrawal. High Pitch was fav--1 curite, but Limited, Ballymoy IL, Lady Cavendish and Aussie were all well backed. Ballymoy 11. was first away, but Dave soon took up the running from Nancy Lee, Limited. Aussie. Licinius and The Hawk. When the field straightened up The Hawk came through to win in good style from Nancy Lee, with Licinius a good third and Dave fourth. It was a good display by The Hawk, who demonstrated that he is still a force to be reckoned with.

FINAL EVENT TO KING SMOCK. The concluding event, the Christmas Handicap, saw Paperchase installed favourite in a field of 23, with Nadarino, Le Choucas, Decoy Bird and Pegaway next in demand. Nadarino carried on the running to the straight, with Delightment, Flying Juliet, King Smock, Eh Timi and Mosaic handy. In a good finish King Smock went through to win a good race from Delightment, with Nadarino close up third. Stormy was fourth.

(By Wire.' —Special to News.) Palmerston North, Jan. 1. The Marton summer meeting opened In dull weather with the track very fast. The racing was first class, and the public had a good day, four first faVourites saluting the judge. The Marton Cup was a great race, Rapier proving himself a smart performer. Royal Damon had no trouble in annexing the Railway Handicap, which drew only four starters.

Crown Area, Musket Vein, Some Lad, Waramau, Maranga, Dale. Ogden and Te Kawaua dropped out of the Trial Plate, and of the eleven runners engaged Archon was accorded most support, with Roburant the only other seriously fancied. Archon was fractious at the barrier, but from a good start was first away from Abbey Queen, and at the end of a furlong the favourite was just ahead of Abbey Queen, with Bissac, Colarina and Ranee. Archon was first into the straight from Abbey Queen, Colarina and Bissae, while Takaroa and Robnrant moved up. Colarina and Abbey Queen went wide coming into the straight, but the favourite was able to stall oft' challenger from Takaroa and Colarina to go on to win nicely by half a length from Colarina, with Takaroa three lengths back third. Bissac ■ was fourth. Then came Abbey Queen, Roburant and Limosa.

HURDLES TO ELVAETTE. The scratching pen reduced the runners in the first Hack Hurdles to five. Euchre, Potoanui, Glcnidle, Highflown, Blood Red, Bonecto, Matti, Shuteye. Boy and Panther did not fulfil their engagement, and Lady Gay was installed favourite, with nearly 200 tickets more | than Elvaette and. Halgina. Star Cliain- | her was first away, and led over the inirtial obstacle from Halgina, Lady Gay, and Axle. Halgina led into the straight and past the stands from Star Chamber, Elvaette, Axle and Lady Gay. Lady Gay moved up on the far bend and at the five furlongs post Halgina was just in front of Elvaette and Lady Gay. Elvaette was clear of Lady Gay going on to the home bend, with Halgina dropping back. Elvaette and Lady Gay were on terms over the last fence, but Elvaette had tod much in hand for the top weight, and won comfortably by three lengths, with Halgina ten lengths back third. Some distance back were Star Chamber nnd Axle. Halgina found the going too hard for him, and was slightly lame on pulling up. HOT FAVOURITE SCORES. Arrow Lad and Lady Limond were hot saddled up for the Juvenile Handicap, and Paleta was made a warm order, carrying 500 tickets more than the second fancy, Tom Bracken. From a good Atari Paleta was first way from Tom Bracken and Otaini. Going round the bend the favourite had two lengths’ advantage over Tom Bracken and Cavity. Once into the straight Paleta went on to . win with ease by two lengths from Tom Bracken, with Otairi a length back third. Cavity was last.

THE RACE FOR THE CUP. Ngata, Brigadier Bill, Stormy, Stat Area, Rouex, Sottana, Kilmiss,' Polar, Kilmezzo and Potoanui were the defections from the Marton Cup. Civility anti Rapier moved attractively in their preliminaries, while Glenross ‘ did not seem to like the bard ground. Tn a good betting race Glenross was entrusted with about £lOO more than Rapier. Then there was a big drop to Civility. From a beautiful start the field ran into the straight in line, and at the distance Diamond Ring was just in front. Going out of the straight the order was Diamond Ring, Glenross, Civility, Rapier, Allmarimba, Novar, Merry Day, and Frisco. The order was unchanged going around the bend, and Diamond Ring was well clear of Glenross and Rapier entering the back stretch. The field closed up at the half mile peg and on the bend Rdpier ran up to second place, with Glenross and Civility handy. Diamond Ring was first into the straight from Rapier and Civility. The Wanganui mare going a bit wide at the distance, Glenross found ail opening on the rails and with Civility and Fresco challenged Rapier. Rapier proved equal to the occasion, and over the last bit drew away again to won by two lengths from Fresco, who gained second place from Civility by the barest of noses. Close up were Diamond King, Glenross, Novar, Merry Dav and Kilfaire. The favourite held a good position throughout the race, getting a run on the rails in the straight, but could not go fast enough in the concluding stages. Civility was also well placed, but running wide at the bottom of the straight did not improve her chance. Rapier was always within striking distance, and over the. last hundred yards made the opposition look very weak. Fresco was in trouble throughout the race, and may have troubled Rapier had he been given a clear run. Diamond Ring tried to win from end to end and should run prominently over a shorter journey.

GREAT DAY WINS NARROWLY. The scratching of Precious, Te Koroke, Horomea, Liu Arlington, Royal Elm, Lightwood, Miss Pat, Joyeuse, Some Lad, Plane and Te Kawaua left nine to contest the Dash Hack Handicap. Great Day was made a less than even money favourite, with Ohai and Powhiri the only others fancied. Lieutenant Bill was left several lengths' at the start, and Ohui was first away from Volplane, Great Day, Guadalquiver and White Ringlet. At the half mile Lady Cynthia had run up to third place. Ohui was first around the bend from Volplane, Lady Cynthia, Great Day, White Ringlet, and Hypnotic, with Powhiri coming fast on the outside. At the distance Ohui was clear of Lady Cynthia and Great Day, but her pilot did not make full use of her, and she was beaten on the post by Great Day by half a length, with Lady Cynthia half a length away tljird. Volplane was fourth and Powhiri ami Hypnotic next.

ROYAL DAMON AGAIN. Only four lined, up for the Railway Handicap, and Royal Damon was made an even money favourite, carrying nearly 400 tickets more than Mireusonta, who had £2OO more invested on him than Banknote. Banknote delayed the start for a while, but when the tapes were released the field jumped off in line. Royal Damon was first to show out, but at the five furlongs post Banknote and Royal Damon were together. Four furlongs from home Royal Damon dropped back, leaving Banknote and Miss Hupana in the lead. Going on to the home bend Banknote and Miss Hu-, paua were two lengths ahead of Mireusonta and Royal Damon. The topweights closed up on reaching the straight. Banknote looked all over a winner at the distance, but Royal Damon got a run on the rails and flew over the last part of the journey, to win by one and a half lengths from Banknote, with Mireusonta a length back and Miss Hupana six lengths away last.

PANART IVINS NEW YEAR. Brigadier Bill, Asleep, Glenidle, Lightwood, Wilderness, Archon and Royal Laud dropped out of the New Year Hack Handicap. Killadie_ did his preliminary but went lame ami was withdrawn with the consent of the stewards. Horomea was made prime fancy, carrying £4OO more than Panart, with Catcall and Conviction also well supported. Conviction was first away, and led out of the straight from Anchor, Horomea, Assurance and Kilburn. Conviction and Horomea were first into the back stretch from Assurance and J’etal. At the half-mile Assurance was making (day from Horomea and Conviction, with Catcall and Panart tailing the field. Assurance led around the bend from Horomea, Conviction, Petal and Kilburn, with Panart making up a lot of ground. Once into the straight Panart got up on the rails and challenged Assurance at the distance, holding on well enough to win by a neck, with Kilburn and Horomea four lengths back. After them came Petal, Catcall and Conviction.

FAVOURITE WINS’ STEWARDS. Only five started in the Stewards' Handicap, in which Polar was made fav-

ourite, with Gold Box and Ngata next fancied. Gold Box wm first to show out from Ngata and Polar. At the five furlongs post Gold Box was leading Polar, Ngata and Santonio. Polar was first into the straight from Gold Box and Santonio. In a good run home Polar lasted long enough to witi by three-quarters of a length from. Kalakaua, with Gold Box three lengtlis back. Then came Ngata and Santonio. SECOND DAY'S ACCEPTANCES. Feilding, Last Night. The acceptances for the second day of the Marton Jockey Club’s meeting on the Feilding course on Monday arc:—

THE ENGLISH TURF. THE LIVERPOOL CUP. London. Nov. 18. (From Our Own Corre«i>ondent.) Winalot was a conspicuous absentee from the field for the Liverpool Cup. His owner did not think the going good enough to give his horse a fair chance —it had been pouring with rain for days previously —and so the five-year-old, who has been one of the best handicappers of his time, retires to the stud. Delius, the expensive Cambridgeshire failure, would have been favourite for the Cup in any ease but the absence of Winalot undoubtedly assisted in Contracting his starting price. A good start was effected, in which the French horse, Sirdar, so far profited by the luck of the draw as to jump away clear, and hold a lead until halfway up the straight. He was theq joined by Invermark, but that companionship did not last long, giving way to Delius just below the distance. Elliott, however, appeared by no means comfortable on the who began to compound as Naldcra drew up alongside. This mare came on well, and looked like winning, until the grey filly, Doushka, loomed up in the role of challenger. Lord Canarton’s horse held on stoutly, and steadily overcame Naldcra. to gain a stylish victory by a couple of lengths. Polish Patriot was third, and then came the favourite, Delius, There was no excuse for Delius. He was admirably ridden—jockeyship was blamed for his failure in the Cambridgeshire—and always in the right place—except, of course, at the finish! The fact is he simply does not stay more than a mile, and one is forced to the conclusion that his Cambridegshire running was not wrong after all. Donzelon, the second favourite, who had been unlucky in the Newbury Handicap the week previously against Perfect Son and Highbrow, and who had won this Liverpool Cup last year, was not seen in the race with a winning chance at any time, though I heard it said that he was baulked of an opening a quarter of a mile from home. Doushka is trained iu the same stable as the Aga Khan’s horses, and she has been pretty- consistent this season, when ridden without undue use of the whip. She beat the Oakj winner, Short Story, clearly enough at York, and now she goes to the stud as the winner of a Liverpool Cup. She coincs of Tetrarch stock, and should therefore do well in her new sphere.
