FAILURE OF A LABOURER
DEFICIENCY OF £6O.
Unsecured debts totalling £B5 3s 9d were shown in the bankrupt estate of Rowland Vincent Edwards, labourer, of New Plymouth, who appeared before the Deputy Official Assignee (Mr. J. S. S. Medley) at New Plymouth yesterday. The only asset was furniture valued at £25, leaving a deficiency of £6O 3s 9d. Bankrupt attributed his failure to sickness in the family and being out of work. No creditors were present, and the meeting lapsed for want of a quorum.
The unsecured creditors were as follow, all of them being resident in New Plymouth:—C. N. Hay, £29; Mrs. A. Parker, £11; G. Ward, grocer, £7; Butler Dairy Company, £8 3s 4d; Lealand Bros., bakers, £6 10s; Dr. Fookes, £5 15s; Dr. Brown, £5 ss; J. McNeill, grocer, £3 19s sd; J. B. Austin, chemist, £1 9s; R. J. Daisley, dairy proprietor, 6s; W. H. Charteris, coal merchant, £1 6s; Hoskin’s Wood and Coal Company, £6. ...» As his creditors were pushing him for a settlement of accounts, and he was unable to meet them, he found himself compelled to file for bankruptcy, said bankrupt in his written statement. During the past three years his earnings owing to broken time and slackness of trade at various times had averaged about £4 5s a week. As he had a wife and six children to support, it took all his earnings to make botji ends meet, and while he regretted having had to take the step, he felt himself unable to offer anything to his creditors. Examined under oath, said his life was insured for about £45.
