WESTOWN SCHOOL SPORTS

CROSS-COUNTRY RACE BY BOYS.

MONEY RAISED FOR OLD PEOPLE

Many happy hours were spent by many happy boys and girls in the grounds of the Westown School yesterday. There were races and games, and those scrambles for lollies so dear to the hearts of all children. The headmaster (Mr. H. F. McClune) and his staff had a busy but successful time in keeping interest at fever heat, and there was not one disappointed pupil when the day was over.

Members of the junior Red Cross Circle conducted a sale of work in the school and from it they raised a net total of £7 2s 9d to provide presents for the inmates, of the Old People’s Home. Many of the articles displayed were made by the girls themselves, and there was not one thing left for sale at the close of the afternoon. The stallholders were: Cakes, Amy Marsden, Sybil Holder and Dolly Norfolk; sweets, Norma Christoffeil, Jean Medley and Matty Shaw; fancy, Nettie Heal, Jean Veale and Nina Coad; produce, -Max Ewart and Ted Batten; ice cream, Marjory Sole and Lorie Kahui. Afternoon tea was obtainable and this department, too, was in charge of girl, pupils.

Chief interest in the athletic events was centred in the cross country race over a stiff course of about 21 miles. It was won by Bruce Robb, with Melville Fogden, Ken Bigwood and Jack Putt next in order. Fastest time was secured by George Shepherd, the runnersup for the honour being J. McGorman and 11. Eva. The time for the distance was about 16 minutes.

Other events were: — 100 yards championship.—Bob McClune 1, J. Veale 2, R. Coad 3. .High jump.—G. Shepherd (4ft. 2in.).
