ENTERTAINMENTS.

THE PEOPLE’S. FRED THOMSON AND SILVER. Planned along fairly familiar Western lines, but lightened with the bright comedy which differentiates all Fred Thomson's pictures from the average westerns, illuminated by some splendid acting, and fairly blazing with the combination of a real cowboy round-up and smashing thrills, “All Around Frying Pan,” a Master picture, proves one of the most delightful and interesting pictures seen in a long time. The famous Alturas round-up has been built into the story, the famous rodeo contest of Western America, with Fred and Silver King as actual contestants. Further entertainment is provided by the big selection of supporting films and special attention is directed to the two final screenings of this picture, this afternoon at a monster matinee at Everybody’s, and at the People’s for Family Night, to-night. EVERYBODY’S. “THE JOHNSTOWN FLOOD.” As presented by William Fox, this vital drama of an event which is without parallel in history presents a spectacular demonstration of the art of motion picture making. This supreme production, is without exception the greatest achievement in melodramatic entertainment that has ever been accomplished by the screen. It is a masterpiece of thrills, authenticated by the work of experts who helped to reconstruct the exact events that startled the whole civilised world when on May 31, 1889, a dam near Johnstown, Pa., burst and whirled its devastating waters through the Valley, causing a loss .of 12,000 lives. All the terror, all the suffering, all the heroism attendant upon this historic calamity is shown with graphic realism. For the telling of this ■epic of heroic bravery and sacrifice Wm. .Fox gathered a superlative cast of players, the first three striking -names being George O’Brien, Florence Gilbert and Janet Gaynor. A splendid selection of short films are shown in support of what has been truly described as “the motion picture spectacle of 1926.” EVERYBODY’S. A BIG HOLIDAY MATINEE TO-DAY. Fred Thomson and -Silver King (two magic names in thrilling and heroic entertainment), are announced to appear at a huge matinee at Everybody’s this afternoon at 2.30. The picture has a true Western title, “All Around Frying Pan,” and presents Fred in a splendid role of heroism and old Silver up to all his tricks. Much of the action shows scenes of a famous cowboy contest with Fred and Silver as competitors, and it has in ■ addition a charming love story which is perfectly, in keeping with Fred Thomson’s standard of appearing only in pictures which teach nothing but the best. THE BEAUTY CONTEST. There is great activity in the camps of the beauty finalists just now. Report has it that Aliss Can-o’berries has definitely refused to recognise 'Miss Tara N. Aki on the street owing to the latter purloining the face cream of the former. We are inclined to discredit this rumour, as Aliss Tara N. Aki is noted for the cream she uses, and it is extremely unlikely that Miss Can-o’-ber-ries uses anything better. Aliss Squawkland has ordered an exquisite creme de menthe gown for Monday’s parade, while Miss O’Tahgo is wearing her Orange Pekoe. • Aliss Swellington, whose admirers are legion, is said to be putting on weight. It is feared that if the parade is postponed for two hours she will be disqualified on the ground of excess avoirdupois. The New Plymouth Savage Club is diligently rehearsing the cororiation ceremonial, and the crown has been ordered. The club has been notified that, in the event of the crown being in use at Buckingham Palace on Monday the coronation must be pc.formed with half-a-crown. The promoters are more than satisfied with the progress so far, and are looking to the .public to help them provide good things for those to whom good things are very good things. For every penny spent in votes there will be a smile of gratitude from some deserving human this Christ-
