PRIMARY SCHOOL SPORTS ELTHAM a WIN DIXON BANNER. BENNETT AND SUTTON CUP TO MATAPU. The South Taranaki primary schools annual sports contests for the Dixon Banner and the Bennett and Sutton Cup were held on the A. and P. showgrounds yesterday, and again this year the sports were favoured with beautiful weather. During the morning batches of school children from about 20 South Taranaki schools arrived in Hawera and at about 10.45 a.m. the procession of visiting school children, headed by the Hawera Main School flute band, moved off from in front of the Winter Show buildings and marched through High Street to the showgrounds, creating a great deal of interest on the way. This year the entries received marked a record, and altogether some 230 boys and 150 girls competed. The last year’s winner of the Dixon Banner was the Okaiawa school and the Mokoia school the Bennett and Sutton Cup. WELCOME TO SCHOOL CHILDREN. Prior to the commencement of the sports, the president (Mr. M. F. Purser), on behalf of the sports committee, e>tended a hearty welcome to all present. He regretted the absence of the secretary, Mr. J. Campbell, who was at present on a world tour, but he was sure that Mr. Campbell would be with them in spirit. The committee had. however, been very fortunate in securing the voluntary services of Mr. A. K. Fyson, who had been of great assistance as honorary secretary.

The patron of the movement, Mr. E. Dixon, said he was delighted to see such a line gathering. He regretted that when he gave the banner he had not given a shield, as the banner was rapidly becoming filled. When the banner was filled he would be pleased to donate a shield. (Applause.) Mr. Dixon wished the competitors every success, and that they would have “a jolly good day’s sport.” , The sports proved most successful, and the lengthy programme was put through without delay to the satisfaction of the competitors and the interest of the large attendance of onlookers. All the events were keenly contested, and excitement reigned supreme during many of the contests. The children entered into the competitions with enthusiasm and a fine spirit pervaded the sports. Winners were enthusiastically applauded, and less fortunate competitors were not dismayed by being defeated. Punctually at 11 a.m. the sports commenced and adjourned at 12 o'clock for luncheon. Provision had been made whereby supplies of boiling water were available for visitors, and the children partook of their lunch in true gipsy style. The officials and visiting teachers were entertained at luncheon, which was provided by the local ladies’ committee, consisting of Mrs. J. W. Harding, assisted by Mesdames J. Winks, Hayward and Miss Ballantine. DIXON BANNER TO ELTHAM A. The annual meeting of the Hawera Municipal Band was held in the band room last evening, the chairman, Mr. E Dixon, presiding over a good attendance of bandsmen and citizens. The annual report was as follows: — “The past has been a year of continued activity and progress. The new set of instruments have been a distinct acquisition and are giving every satisfaction. As a result of the band’s carnival these were paid for on arrival. During the year the organisation of the junior band has beer. ■ irried out, and it is making splendid : ogress under Conductor Fox and Bai ...master Gould. The success of this branch of activity will be apparent in the near future. The players take a keen interest in the work. Owing to the roll steward having lost the roll book the number of rehearsals and public performances is not complete, but is approximately: Rehearsals 96, publie performances 60. AU organisations that have engaged the band have expressed themselves as well pleased with the programmes submitted, and the continued improvement in the band’s work. During the year we have had a number of resignations, Bandsmen Walden, Kingston, Cudby, Mitchell, Gilbert and Slater and Newton having left for various reasons, but we have kept up to full strength. The roll numbers are at present: Senior 29, auxiliary 26. It is only the lack of instruments that prevents us from further augmenting our membership. The band have entered for the forthcoming contest to be held in Wellington in February, and we feel sure that with strict attention to rehearsals and doing all that is required by the conductor, that the band will do credit to themeelves and their town. We are pleased to say that the conductor (Mr. Fox) is giving every satisfaction, and the bandsmen have expressed their confidence in him on various occasions.

We are indebted to the Borough Council for the subsidy of £2OO and councillors ckn rest assured that those placed in charge of the band’s affairs will do all possible to merit the same support in the future. The financial statement showed a credit of £6O 0s 7d, excluding the £35 from the Rotary Club. Over £lOOO had been handled by the treasurer during the year.
